Your recommendations for faction focus for a couple of new players?

My son and I have both been playing about a week. I just bought him 10 orbs and he got insanely lucky with epics and legends, and based on some of those cards will probably focus on Magmar for now. I haven’t opened my orbs yet but I have been playing (weak) Lyonar and Magmar decks and like both of these factions.

I’m not entirely sure where to focus in the short-to-mid term. If you were starting from scratch and aiming to be a mid-level player for now and a good player later, what would you focus on?

I’m also thinking Magmar could be really good with the expansion thanks to the egg buffs.

Thanks for your thoughts.

First of all, I think it’s awesome that you are playing Duelyst with your son!

I’d say Lyonar and Magmar are great factions to start off with! My advice like many others, would be just to relax and just enjoy the game. Don’t rush to break down cards, because you might want to try out different things in the future. You will do a huge skill jump in the game, if you know your opponent’s potential card pool and can successfully predict what they will play next. One of the best ways of doing this is just by trying out multiple factions and getting more familiar with their cards, and play styles.

Thanks for the reply!

I basically dived into this game head first, playing a lot and streaming. I really want to get to rank 10 by the end of Sunday but have been mired down in the area of 15-16 with the mostly-basic decks I’ve been using.

I just opened 10 orbs and got a little stuff to help with a Lyonar deck and a little for a Magmar deck. I also got some terrible epic and legendary cards and feel it would make more sense to DE them to get spirit to help me get a winning deck so I can get the monthly legendary, rather than have these cards I won’t use sit around while I struggle with terrible decks.

If that makes any sense.

Argeon (Lyonar) and Kara (Vanar) are by far the most cost-efficient decks to build, ignoring the chance of you pulling exactly the right Epic or Legendary card. Lyonar only really needs Ironcliffe Guardian and Divine Bond, as can be seen here, with 3 Dioltas and 2-3 Holy Immolation being the only major upgrades for competitive play as seen here - Arclyte Regalia is really powerful but can be replaced with more bodies to control the board and receive Holy Immolation.

Kara is probably the best budget general of them all - looking at this S-Rank Kara deck from ManaGlow, you can see that the only cards that aren’t either Basic or Common are the 5 Legendaries (L’Kian and Spelljammer) being used to ensure that your hand remains full of minions to buff with your BBS. Substitute in cheaper ways of drawing cards (such as Sojourner and Blaze Hound) and you basically have the most powerful budget deck in the game - L’Kian is reasonably easy to unlock as you accumulate more Neutral Rares for other decks, so the only card that you’re actually paying full retail price for is Spelljammer.

Magmar is pretty strong as well. It’s historically been known as an expensive faction because of the prevalence of Magmar Control, which aims to drag out the game and capitalize on the late-game value of Legendaries such as Silithar Eldar, Pandora, Dark Nemesis and occasionally Khymera. On the other hand, aggressive versions of Magmar are far more affordable and Earth Sister Taygete gives you a huge power boost for completing all of the Magmar Rares - the deck really needs a full set of Makantor Warbeast to really shine, but the faction has gone from being a poor choice for budget players to probably being well above average once you’ve crossed the enormous tipping point that is unlocking Taygete. It’s pretty much impossible to say how much Magmar will benefit from the expansion without knowing how much stronger the other factions all become, since power level is entirely contextual on what your opponents are going to be playing, but there’s nothing that suggests that they’re going to do poorly.

Wow, what a superb answer! The only problem with it is how it is making it hard for me to choose! But choices are good. I wouldn’t mind having 2 or 3 good budget decks.

One of my problems at the moment is everyone keeps telling me that as a newbie I shouldn’t DE anything, but if I don’t, I can’t craft the rares and epics I need to be competitive.

It turns out I got 8 epics and 4 legendaries from my 10 orbs, which is good, but they are not good ones, which is bad. (I bought my son 10 orbs and he got a Silithar Elder, Makantor Warbeast and 2 Dioltas, along with some other stuff! I hate him! )

I think I am going to start with Lyonar and at least disenchant something to make 2 more Ironcliffes and get some lions.

Thanks!

To be fair, that’s a pretty huge chunk of Spirit - you can basically think of those 4 Legendaries as pulling the Epic of your choice (because of the disenchant value), while any truly bad Epics can be turned into dust. Which Epics and Legendaries did you pull?

Even as a beginner, there are some cards that are really safe to disenchant like Swamp Entangler. This is the best DE Guide I’ve found.

Agreed on the spirit value but thus the conundrum on DEing. attheedge, thanks I have seen that guide, thank you.

I want to be very careful about DEing with an expansion looming. I also want to hit gold by Sunday night. Tough choices.

I can’t login right now but IIRC my legends were Scion’s Third Wish (and I already had 1, and it was 1 of only 3 I owned), Alter Rexx (seems EXTREMELY situational), Rook (?) and Zurael (seems decent, but very slow).

Epics were not great either. I pulled 2 more Alcuins and already had 1, and not much else that’s memorable.

Alter Rexx is pretty good IF you are playing a Mech Deck, but otherwise… Rook is bad, way too slow, but Zurael is ok

I’d agree alter rexx and rook can go.

Thanks. I don’t think Scion’s Third looks very good either (especially given how good Second is, and it’s free!)

But maybe it will be more relevant in the expansion.

Scion’s Third Wish and Zurael are both rather bad cards at the moment, but they’re both bad because of the lack of powerful enough synergy - it’s possible that they could receive the synergy they need in the next expansion, so they’re worth holding onto for now.

On the other hand, Alter Rexx and Rook can definitely go - if disenchanting them allows you to reach Gold, then you’ve traded in two bad Legendaries for two powerful Epics and another Legendary (which can either be kept or disenchanted). I’d definitely go for it

if your planning on playing vet it’s probably alright to keep if not though it’s free dust. But first if your not gonna spend money focus on specific factions. So that you can net some of those legends and epics. F2p is possible but don’t craft until you know what you wanna do. Spirit doesn’t come that easy.

I think Magmar is a good faction. You can just play simple strong cards that have good value then use one of their finishers to close out the game. Also has access to good removal. Makantors I think are the only necessary card that is expensive to craft.

You have good aggro, midrange, and control options. You can play complicated ramping decks too once you get more dust and build up your collection, but their are plenty of good basic and cheaper cards you can use.

This deck here may have a lack of card draw and removal but it’s really cheap and I think it should bring you to Gold.
You want to have those Warbeasts which make 2/3 of the spirit you need.
Sorry being short in words - I’m a bit in a hurry.

Edit:
Play on curve
Save Repulsor Beasts for (big) Provokes
Save Tigers for reaching Mini Jaxis and Heartseekers or combo with Greater Fortitude for removal or going face.
Use Claws for removal or going face.
If you have Egg Morph don’t hesitate to replace one Plasma Storm and one Veteran for them.

Welcome to the breeding family! :hatching_chick:

I feel that in duelyst, experimenting is half the fun. I’ve tried crafting and disenchantinf cards, but I have had the most fun just fooling around, getting gold, then purchasing spirit orbs.

This is where duelyst’s generosity is strong. The quests give a lot of gold even if u lose. Your collection for experimenting will only grow as you experiment, never shrink.

That is why duelyst is my favorite tcg. The penalty for being bad isn’t too bad.
