What if we had different maps?

Inspired by the fresh revelation of Celebrant, I was thinking: what if the game introduced different maps as battlefields?

I don’t necessarily mean anything as complex as having different terrains, but just different shapes of the map and different positioning of mana tiles. This would add a little bit of depth and freshness to the game, possibly making a few units better or worse depending on the map.

Would you like to have some map variety in the game? Do you think it could be balanced without changing the existing cards? I don’t think of randomly generated maps, but say 3 or 4 different carefully crafted maps.

I don’t think that a different map could be added to the rotation without unbalancing the game, as some decks would have an advantage. For example, Mist Dragon Seal or Repulsor on a bigger board.

For a new gamemode, sure, it’d be sweet

I concur with @whyb0t on this. The game’s balance would be directly affected in a major way if the map size or shape were changed. Anything with range, flying, blast, “nearby” effects, etc would all have changed importance.

Queueing up on the ladder and being matched against a faction that has a favorable matchup against yours is bad enough as it is. Having to potentially play on a map that makes your deck less powerful would be a problem as well.

Were these maps selectable as a different game queue, it would be more acceptable. However that comes with problems of its own.

I’m in! But the maps would have to be of the same sizes

It would be cool if it was a different game mode but not if it was added into ranked. I think it would be fun to play in a bigger map and use more stuff like ranged and flying units but it wouldnt be good in ranked.

I think this would be great, even if you keep the battlefield the same size you can alter the map by:

  • repositioning mana tiles or add more/ less (1 or 5)
  • create ‘gaps’ on the battlefield which can not be moved on to make positioning different
  • place ‘barricades’ which can be attacked and destroyed, which changes the zoning and movement early game.

I also have the feeling that this is not impossible to implement without breaking balance. Sure, some care is needed, but what you propose sounds reasonable to me! It would be fun
