If you define everything as all that exists, then you have placed a constraint on the concept of everything. It’s like saying a blue ball is not part of “everything red” unless it’s also red,
but up know what I mean
.

In your case, something that does not exist is not something that exists, quantum bs aside.

Also, when I say binary, I meant in terms of true/false, something that either is or is not and cannot be in any other state.

As far as existence is concerned, I’ll be the devil’s advocate and state I believe you can’t prove we, or anything exists. All of what we call reality is observed within our own subjective perception. I cannot prove that you see it experience what I do. You could be an illusion generated by my own mind (metaphysical solipsism).

Edit: For those of you who love anime, the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is based around a creationist ideal of solipsism. Regardless of your beliefs, I highly recommend the show.

All I gots to say 'bout that is…

That would make us an extension of each other’s perception, @longshot405. Are we going to be ok with that?

I can still hate you if you’re a part of me, because I already hate myself. Afterall, even the foolish plebians who are nothing but love can still have nightmares, an extension of one’s subconscious self.

<Also, Star Ocean 3 was an awesome game, but the acting is laughably bad>

But…you are already taking my self-hate upon yourself…that’s too much hate for one person! So if I take your self-hate…we will have traded hate. But as we are illusions to each other, we would just be back to hating ourselves. That would mean there is only self-hate, and you could not have taken my hate upon yourself to start with…

…so by observing my happiness on this thread, you are actually observing your own happiness…because your observation of my existence would just be the realization of your own, happy or otherwise…

…really, if one extrapolates every possible external observation as an illusion of one’s own existence, then we are all gods, and everything and everyone is a creation of everything…or nothing…

…and who are we to say atoms aren’t conscious? If they stop observing us, do we cease to exist?

We’re stumbling closer and closer to the greatest and most confusing
mystery of all, sentience.

Stumbling is a very appropriate description.

Are we the atoms that make us up? Are we each a small part of a system that
dictates our behavior? What is the definition of sentience? I personally
believe that the answer is the ability to commit suicide. It is the
ultimate escape from the cycle of evolution, which raises up the organisms
most dedicated to the defense of their species. Would I recommend it?
Certainly not. But that brings up another question. Is sentience even a
good thing? My definition of sentience would say that sentience is the
ability to look beyond the blinders put on us by society and evolution. In
this case, sentience would be the complete rejection of morals and social
conventions. If you look at it this way, sentience is a form of insanity.

Go home Isbee, you’re drunk <and don’t come back>

But actually, even were you a product of my own mind, I do not identify you as part of me. We are all capable of conjuring thoughts contradictory to our own ideals, and were you an illusion of my mind, that would not necessarily make hating you the same as hating me. It’d be hating a consequence of my reality.

That last line was pretty edgy

But yeah, solipsism basically dictates that there is only one solipsist, since everything is created by their perception. This person is essentially a god, a sleeping god with no control or possibly even recognition of their ability. When they cease to exist, so too does everything else.

I love philosophy

Aye, I say atoms aren’t conscious. Truly what we perceive as “Consciousness”, is really just a bunch of chemical reactions happening in our brain. What we see, hear, and feel, are nothing more than a chemical response to stimuli. We rationalize our own existence by trying to view ourselves as a “one” or a whole, as the alternative of accepting that we are nothing but meat robots. But I… I am above you plebians…

You fool! Assuming yourself to be above us will only end in your fall! Do you ignore the repetition in human history? Do you contradict your own point by ignoring the stimuli that result in learning!? Your ignorance will be your end, fool.

Ah, so more of a hard determinism point of view? Everything is nothing but atoms and physical objects banging together in a predetermined way? There is no free will! All is set in stone by physics causing particles to act and react according to a plan set in motion long ago!

Here’s a something interesting to chew on. If everything is determined and all our thoughts and emotions are just chemical reactions in our brains telling us to act this way. Isn’t it ironic that we occasionally ponder our own existence? BECAUSE WE MUST?!

@mmf, what if Schrodinger’s cat is the one true solipsist? What does it mean for us, who exist only by a cat that assumed to and not to exist simultaneously?

I find it bizzarely amusing that isbee hasn’t liked this comment yet. Possibly because he has a wife so he’s kinda obligated to sexually identify as a man.

I’ve been accused of being drunk a couple times now. I find this amusing because I have never imbibed…
…although, after facing Vanar regularly, I might have to consider it…
