Dang. Vanar has really strong 8 drops. Good thing they have ramp I guess…
The first card to underwhelm me in this expansion, seriously. Too slow, too fragile, and the effect already exists in a better state in Vanar (Concealing Shroud). Needs a buff already.

Well, I actually wasn’t too far off, in spirit…and I originally thought 6 mana 7/6…but thought that’d be dumb…

Also, I find it hilarious that this essentially turns your general into a panddo. I guess this can be good at cheesing boss fights?
Hmm. Interesting. So obviously if this ever sees play it’s going to be in Control Vanar because that’s really the only deck that can ramp this out fast enough and enjoy the protection it provides. Unlike other 8 drops that traditionally see play like Embla, Matron is a defensive card that protects your general from minions. I think it’s an alright card to run 1 or 2 off in Control Vanar to survive midrange/ aggro decks. I agree it could be more, but still putting this in a safe position can really put a halt on the aggression. Yes, removal is a thing and I personally think it would’ve been interesting to give it cannot be targetted by spells. But it does come late in the game so perhaps your opponent has burned through resources and Matron could be the nail in the coffin? Like I said I don’t think it’s amazing but could see fringe play depending on how the meta turns out and if people pick up Control Vanar again.
But, you can just play dank nemesis (or meltdown!) and kill them instead if they don’t have removal.
Pretty good card, but heavily out shined by other expensive cards. There’s little to no reason to play her over any other choices.
I can see it now: Sinister Silhouette, Concealing Shroud, Matron Elveiti, and Warbird, Warbird, Warbird.
I’m still overall excited for the expansion, but I’m not particularly excited for Vanar.
If you’re a situation where you’re being pressured by a Midrange deck Dark Nemesis and Meltdown do not stop your opponent from beating you down. They don’t swing the game fast enough to stop possible aggression. Unlike those two Matron is a defensive card. It doesn’t win the game but stops aggression.
For an example, if you’re facing Midrange Mar and Magmar has a Lavaslasher and A Taygette in your face. Dark Nemesis and Meltdown won’t necessarily save you. But Matron in a good spot can buy you time to look for board clears and threats.

About the card… she’s only got 5 health, which seems low…
At 7/7 at least you have the body after a dispel or so.
I don’t know, it does seem superfluous and a bit underwhelming considering all the other cards, but maybe there’s a combo waiting? I kind of doubt it though.
Will try it out as I do every card, but yeah, seems weak. Such a shame of such awesome art

Perhaps my example were flawed, but I can’t see this being better than other 8 drops, like Pandora.
For this card to do something three things must be true
- The enemy doesn’t have removal
- The enemy is pressuring face hard
- But not hard enough that you can walk away unblocked and drop a minion in a safe space
Which is too situational, considering the reward (stall), and too risky as a 8 mana investment when tiger + roar can clear it clean.
