Never liked Ponyo, not too sure why. On another note, has anyone seen Legend of Earthsea?

To be honest, it was horrible. Definitely one of the weakest Ghibli films.

Cant argue with ya there.

Still almost tho, given how many friggin amazing movies ghibly and shinkai have thrown out. Oh yeah and a silent voice.

Also, havent seen earthsea and actually wanna see it, just so I can get more perspective.

I can agree there somewhat, it didn’t seem to fit together well at all. Though it was my first introduction to a trap. Overall i didn’t think it was too well known and was wondering who had actually seen it.

Give it a watch, the narrative is pretty wack sometimes though, and the characters aren’t as good as in other ghibli though.

Well, the guy who directed it sat under the shadow of his godlike dad, had to continue an adaption like already halfway through, had to direct as his first movie when he already lacked proper training given his chosen career wasnt even gonna have anything to do with film. Oh yeah, he was also adapting a ginormous series.

Im very familiar with circumstances and criticism, bur I always give things a try first.

I have yet to see A Silent Voice, sadly. My favorite movie by Shinkai Makoto is Garden of Words, which for some reason doesn’t seem to be as discussed as much as 5 Centimeters per Second and Your Name.

It just had so much potential. Ghibli could’ve done so much more with a high fantasy setting, but nope.

I have actually read that one and seen some of it. I think its pretty good, but it doesnt really appeal to the broader and more general audience.

It is the relationship between a guy with a slight foot fetish and a slightly older lady with an ending that has been considered unsatisfactory by some.

That said, I thought it was alright. I just think shinkai could have developed the characters personalities more. They felt like a sharp spike instead of a rounder character design. (because he focused on their love of words and his love of her feet and shoemaking more than he did relating the characters to more easily felt emotions, and did a lackluster job of playing the audience to inflict empathy upon them. Tl; Dr it ended up feeling like a more elaborate game of show and tell instead of actually helping ground the characters and relating the reasons for their emotion)

I liked it though, because it’s a more heartfelt portrayal of reality. Standing back up after giving up is a part of life, following your dreams is a part of life, but not a miraculous love at first sight.

I absolutely agree with that. The first part about the ending is more general, the second is more of my beef. (That it generally had a hard time of relating the characters and rounding them out, and instead it focused more on those concepts through the characters instead of making characters from those concepts to me)

Interestly enough the end is about knowing when to let go as well, which is an interesting contradiction which actually supports his previous theme of standing up after getting knocked down by showing there is a time for both.

While this may sound like an advantadge, it really isnt when you realize hes gotta steer someone elses vision like half a ship, given an unexpected absence of that person and work either gonna be wasted or repurposed into something worse.

When one of us gets obscenely rich we should help pay for the other main forum members to fly over to where the one is and we should have one giant meetup or something.

Oh and @halcyon98 you said you like wolf children

Heres a recent but expired ama with its director

I see what you mean. It would have been great if the movie had a longer runtime to flesh out these characters more.

Cool, thanks a lot. Mamoru Hosada is just fantastic.

I almost lost. I almost forgot and gave into touching the blue, but the glaring yellow avatar screamed at something deep and primal within me. I moved my cursor away and kept scrolling. @mmf, I’m still not clicking your links!

Konosuba is good. Although that genre of anime is not my taste, I enjoyed it. That alone says something good about it. :+1:

Every time I get caught up in work, I stop reading this thread for a few days, then I come and read it all; it’s amazing how consistently I find refuge in this little world of ours.

I just wanted to let y’all know how much I appreciate this thread, even if I barely play Dooli anymore.

As for what you’ve said, @isbee , I don’t know if I can truly relate, but I’m of the opinion that all emotions are an important part of life, and always good to have. even the pain but especially the happiness, whatever that is.

And even if y’all don’t remember me (I’m not exactly the most verbose) I’m sure as hell not gonna forget you guys. And I’m thankful for that! I don’t want wanna make it seem like I’m saying goodbye; if anything, I’ll be trying to come here more often.

On a less serious note, I gotta thank @epicflygon I’m really enjoying Dead Cells, even if I kinda suck at it

And what @deekester is doing looks nice!

…I should probably get back to listening to this lecture. But I’ve already done analysis before, listening to our lecturer defining supremums is boring me to death -_-
