  • Standardized testing is good; it stops private schools from inflating grades and makes sure all students are of the same level before higher education/entering the work force
  • Standardized testing is bad; it encourages teachers to teach students only what is on a test and not actually useful information. It values memorizing facts more than problem solving.
  • All in all you’re just another brick in the wall.

The main problem with schools in my opinion, is that people aren’t taught more useful everyday things or things that should be more common knowledge. In the end tests are only really there for two reasons. To act as a gate to block people from being able to apply/enter certain schools, colleges or universities. Or to show you have the ability to remember/learn/demonstrate certain information that may or may not be ever used again in the future. If you learn something only for a test and never use it beyond that, then I think it was a waste of everyone’s time in the end.

Learning how to learn…how to teach yourself…how to share knowledge…

…that’s what I wanted out of my education.

School doesn’t aim to teach useless knowledge, it aims to create a mindset that you can use to thrive later on.

I disagree, school doesn’t teach that mindset at all. You’ll develop that mindset yourself over time. Some people get it while still in school, while others don’t get it until afterwards, while some will never get it. While I would like to give some credit school with something because you do spend a long time within school, I personally couldn’t give school any real credit. I can credit certain teachers I had while at school. I can credit my college and university. But school, the school system and tests, I wouldn’t credit them at all.

I have to agree. The education system is outdated and doesnt really help you learn how to think like you need to in todays world, because back in the day you didnt have to think. You had to obey. Industry was booming back then, so the main job was being able to follow orders the best. Sadly, schooling still reflects that today. While I have had many amazing teachers who really have helped me learn, it is because they went above and beyond. Not because the mandatories of the school system made them do so.

At least in Ireland the education system is pretty good, not to mention it is relatively free.

Standardized testing is inflating grades. Remember back when a SAT score of 1500 was good enough?
