(Super) Beginner Magmar Deck - Need Help!

Greetings!
I’m pretty new to Duelyst, have only been playing for a few days or so. Currently, I’m in LOVE with Magmar, with their huge attack and low cost. I’ve browsed around for budget decks, and was pretty lucky to draw some great meta cards from the orbs, and here’s what I came up with:

I really don’t know what to say of this deck, all I can say is that this deck has managed to get me to the 20th rank in one go, but then again that’s nothing impressive, and I kind of feel that I’m forcing the deck to have a pretty low average summoning cost, so I need your help!

Welcome to duelyst!

It’s pretty cool

But back to your deck.

First of all, 1 offs hurt your deck consistency unless they are a very specific tech card (something situational) Kujata isn’t really needed anyways

I’d DE the Kujata and make another elucidator

Second, phalanxar is bad. Anything can clear it, especially bloodtear, or songhai. Almost anything else would be better. Try healing mystic.

Take out the two Kollussus and replace it with another young silithar and another shieldmaster.

Can I ask your general playstyle as well?

Do you slowly take out their minions, and make more of yours, using earth sphere to recover the health you lose from clearing stuff?

Or do you rush and try to take them down fast?

Dunno if you saw mine, though I see similarities, so I feel like you might have.

Beginner tips:
-Make decks consistent. 1 of’s (cards you are only using 1 of) are too infrequent and won’t have the reliability of showing up when needed. My suggested rule of thumb: 3 for core cards, 2 for conditional/situational (buff cards are a good example), generally no 1 of’s, but if you put in a 1 of, it should be a decisive finishing card usually.
-Build your deck in a way where you can imagine how each “phase” will play out (the first couple turns, your midgame goal/strengths/weaknesses, how you can to close out; usually bursty)

Specific tips regarding your deck:
Remove Phalanxar, i’d suggest putting in healing mystic.
Both your 1 of’s (keep elucidator maybe only if you have or will have a 2nd copy)

Phalanxar is outdated and is at too large a risk at 1 hp.

Edit: You clearly did take a look at my budget deck. I’d ask how your deck has felt since trying out your version, and I hope you make it to gold; best of luck

Welcome to duelyst! You chose the right faction, my friend. As far as your deck goes the others are pretty on top of your substitutions. I will say though that people run bloodtear over maw because it’s cheaper, has just as much attack, and can damage enemies from a distance.

Other than that I would try and decide whether you want to focus on tempo or late game, as you can find out if you want more or less lower-cost cards.

No.

@vonnbit: If you really like to main Magmar I’d highly recommend not to DE Kujata since it’s used quite frequently in decks which like to ramp out your minions. It has synergies with cards like Earth Sister, Juggernaut, Amplification and Twin Fang and it doesn’t hurt the very often played Sunsteel Defender.

DEing Kujata is a wrong recommendation for Magmar players - simple as that.

First thing to know when you join magmar and start building decks is that Cp hates eggs and doesn’t care about dinosaur people.

Presumably why they printed Ragebinder then.

Having tinkered about with some Magmar of my own, the crocodiles love them Flash Reincarnation. It’s only blue rarity (Rare), and thus crafts for 100 spirit a piece.

When I wondered how to approach Magmar I happened to already have Ancient Bonds for plenty of Golem synergies. For additions to that I crafted a set of Flash Reincarnation, and a set of Golem Metallurgist (though that one’s not really that needed, even though great). That’ll give you the best value for Ragebinder, Lavalasher and Juggernaut, all excellent golemy minions.

You’re really lucky to start off with Kujata and TWO Makantor Warbeasts! To be fair, Makantor is so powerful I almost enjoy playing without one (not that I have a say in that - no draws from orbs and no spirit for more than one atm), so you can’t really go wrong with those guys.

Make sure to check out The Church of the Makantor thread for more Magmar discussion!

Yours,

a total Magmar newb as well
