State of the metagame?

I’m a former competitive yugioh player and have recently gotten re-obsessed with this game after taking a long break from it. In yugioh there is an established metagame. There are always a set 2-3 top decks in the game. I was wondering what the state of the metagame is for this game. What would be the tier-0,1,2,3 decks for this format and what makes them as such? (tier-0 would be decks that are next to unbeatable. In yugioh they define it as any deck with a 90% win ratio in competitive tournaments)

From my guess from looking at replays I noticed which clans seem to be the strongest currently.
Magmar seems to be dominating the game. To the point where every single game I see has magmar in it for the higher ranked matches.
Next up I’m guessing lyonar which makes sense to me since they have some really good generals.
I think next up would be vanar, then songhai, then Abyssian.
I’m more looking towards what builds are winning as opposed to just the ranking of the clans though.

everyone not named abyssian you can make an argument for being the top deck, the meta is wide open and basically anything goes. There is also an issue where the lack of a competitive scene means that many top players don’t play too seriously or even at all so the meta is not too important compared to player skill.

Is there really no established competitive scene? That’s kind of discouraging.

It’s kind of on an off season. World tournament was a while ago, prep for the next hasn’t really begun. But you can’t forget how much smaller this game and community is from something like YuGi or Hearthstone

Yeah but from what i’ve heard there’s still a couple thousand in the playerbase. I heard somebody talking about numbers on a stream and said that from steam there’s around 2k and then from the launcher itself there’s another 2-3k. Also the forum seems pretty reasonably active.

May I take this moment to say how much I hate the Yugioh meta? 90% of the cards are unusable, and the viable decks are all overcomplicated and stale. Cards are frustrating, the pacing is absurdly fast, and game mechanics are an infinitely expanding disarray of overcomplication. Yes, I still love the game with all my heart, but I sometimes do miss earlier times.

I mean the game actually slowed down a bit. The rules are really simple once you think about them for a second. You don’t HAVE to play meta and all the cards are usable. Just not optimal. Just like this game. You can technically play whatever you want just don’t go to competitive tournaments you have to pay for without having a somewhat sensible deck made. The newest mechanic has actually brought back alot of old cards.

My friend has been playing the same deck since I met him (over 5 years ago) and has just been updating his builds to get with the times. I’ve also been playing the same deck for years and my deck even got new support as did dozens of decks from the olden days of the game. Yugioh tournament turnouts are at an all time high. (wouldn’t let me put all of it on one post sorry for double reply)

you sure about that?

It was either that or double helix, imo SPYRALs now are still faster than fusion sub zoo (just easier to beat)

I mean yeah there are a couple decks that retain speed. But they utilize the new mechanic. It doesn’t matter what konami does by this point because players will find ways to exploit anything they do. But this was alot better than the extra deck impossible ot break board spam we used to have. Also now those boards are much easier to stop.

Playing through a skill drain on legs with only 5 cards in hand is a lot harder to break than a single raigeki break on legs, or a 3k beater which can banish a card once per turn. Granted its a lot better than nekroz or Pepe format.

anyways. back to the topic. I’m actually really sad that this game doesn’t have as much of a competitive playerbase as yugioh does. I really don’t want to see this game die considering it’s one of the best games I’ve played in a minute

Agree with @halcyon98, I have actually heard from some people I know that they play Yugioh. I got excited to play after a few years of inactivity only to find out how many things they added. Seriously, just too many for me to remember, probably won’t go back. I am just a simple person wishing for a simpler time.

Not to mention the absolutely ridiculous archetype designs that only can be fixed with the ban list. Remember the Dragon Rulers? Or PePe? Or Zoodiacs? The meta was entirely obliterated, and something tells me that it won’t be the last time.

I think I will just create a message for talk about ygo.

Pm me if interested.

Its a problem. Without a main tournament (like worlds), it makes smaller (or grassroot) tournaments harder to establish because there is no real motivation for players to do them, unless you really want the prizes that those particular tournaments give out. Last year there was a world tournament and around 9 months or so, of having to gain qualification for it through ranked, tournaments points or the Duelyst open tournament. Which has a knock-on effect to ranked as well, for people who wanted to participant in that part of the scene since ranked isn’t as rewarding because it doesn’t contribute to anything except for helping to expand your collection via playing the game more and ranked rewards. But Duelyst is part of Namco now, so its probably why another worlds tournament hasn’t been setup yet. Either because Namco isn’t interested or they are interested but there is background things going on which we don’t see and haven’t been given the news on that front.

Exactly, which isn’t big enough for a large or consistent competitive scene.

This is a major problem. If you don’t establish a competitive scene people don’t get turnover for their hard work expanding their collections. It makes gameplay feel unrewarding. This needs to be fixed if namco wants to make money off this game. I know plenty of people who play yugioh who would love this game. They need to invest in marketing towards the yugioh scene like they did with slaydra(which is where i’m pretty sure half the players came from) or hell even hearthstone. I feel like this game is honestly one of the best games that’s come out in years and I know for a fact that without a competitive scene games like this just do not last
