Well i am gold 8 right now and just got matched with s rank #1 player. What the heck is going on? I just wonder if population is so low or it’s just some accident in matchmaking?

It may just due to how early the season is. With not a lot of s rank or diamonds players online, the long ques may match s rank players with those in lower ranks (like gold).
If the matchmaker can’t find an appropriate opponent within a time frame it will decide that playing against an “unequal” opponent is better than playing against no one.
Either you or (more likely) your opponent was in queue for too long and then the two of got matched for the sake of having a game.

Also got confirmation that your rank display is not updated on your first match of the season.
If you end season in S, on your first match of next season, even if you’re Silver, you are displayed as S-Rank.

Thanks for answer i think that my opponent was waiting too long for match and got me :D, it was s-rank for sure cuz i checked in s-rank live ranking
Honestly, it seems there are very few players around on ladder. Based on my friend list, a lot of people are not playing, either annoyed by the meta or waiting for the new expansion to hit.
Let’s hope the expansion shakes things up a bit.

To be honest, expansion may bring back some people but just for few days/weeks only hope which can shakes things up is mobile release that was announced for Q1 of 2017, so i think that game will fall sooner or later 
Dunno for you guys but with all the people spreading the word about “population is so low”, “very few players around on ladder” or “game will fall sooner or later” I started to keep track of my queuing.
Today I made 12 matches, waiting time was at 0:12 sec, never waited more than 20sec.
Yesterday I made 14 matches, waiting time was at 0:16 sec, never waited more than 30sec.
Also, among my 50 last matches over the past 4 days, I only met the same player twice (heya @degenerator).
I guess I’m lucky with Duelyst deserted and dying

Im actually not playing cuz collegue exams. I guess half of Diamond or higer ranks are in the same situation as me.

Last month I often had queueing times of around 1 minute and I played against S-Rank players at Diamond 5. Also, I played against a couple of friends from my list, which is weird at that rank.
This month I’m not playing that much, but I would be surprised if it was any different.
I hope you won’t mind if, for this season expectations, I tend to trust facts that I genuinely observed with my average 12/15 match everyday than on guess from someone “not playing that much”. 
Edit : 10ish matches tonight, waiting time displayed around 0:15 more or less, can’t say exactly because most of them, matchmaking was instantaneous, lucky me ! 
You are welcome to your opinions, but, as a matter of fact, most people in my friend lists are not playing and the numbers of the Duelyst Reddit are constantly decreasing.
The game is far from being dead, but there is an obvious negative trend. Not acknowledging it is short-sighted and I hope the devs have serious plans for the next expansion and the mobile release.
Would be interesting to know which rank and which time zone you are in. I don’t have any doubts that there are still enough players around in silver and maybe even in gold. But the amount of goldplayers I had to stomp on my way to s last month was unreal. I faced more gold than s-ranks in high diamond and my actual waiting times (not the average one that is displayed) exeeded the one minute mark on a regular basis. This wasn’t the case in any if the months before and my playtimes didn’t change. Don’t know about this month though.
Since I play regularly (9/10 seasons) I’m most of the time Diamond and timezone is CEST.
Oh, I see, you didn’t play for 1/3 of the season.

It was exactly the same for me last month, I guess I’ve been lucky every month.
(also, last month, if I understood correctly, the waiting time display was bugged and fixed to 1:00min, no matter if you had to wait 30sec or 1min30)
