Reports from the Den of Evil [How to beat Finality Vaath]

Hey ho,

thought I’d share some of my losses playing Saurian Finality Vaath* so other players can learn what to play and how to battle the green menace.

This is the deck that I’m running

These are the decks that hurt my feelings

SpellBrome (as piloted by ChunkyPapa) - Only runs nine minions to brick most of my cards, uses lots of heal to keep up with Finalities, Sun Bloom to make Vaath not-so-great again, lots of spell-based nukes to progress the game without relying on minions and most importantly Arclyte Regalia and Dawn’s Eye to crush any lizard’s dreams of headbutting their way to victory

Mid-Range Vetruvian (can be Zirix, can be Sajj) - Thunderhorn (+ Repulsor), Scion’s Second Wish and Aymara as troublesome minions, Lost in the Desert to hurt Vaaths feelings, artifacts to gain value without getting blown out by removal, EMP/Shroud to make Vaath puny, Mirage to brick Makantor

ShidaiArcanyst (as played by Moggin) - One minion: Owlbeast Sage. Vaath doesn’t run a lot of EMP/mass dispel for obvious reasons and Owlbeast makes it so most of Magmar’s removal is poop. Eventually you are just overrun by an army of Arcanysts. Unless you curve out perfectly it’s very hard to kill Shidai before he gets his first Owl off and once that happened it’s hard to catch up again

Recurring themes

  • few minions
  • minions that sidestep Magmar’s removal
  • artifacts
  • sustained spell damage (as far as possible)
  • dispel (especially right after Finality)
  • staying out of melee range of Vaath (especially the turn before Finality is cast)

I’ll update the list as I progress. Maybe this is helpful for those who don’t have succumbed to the dark side.

Excellent work! It was an interesting read

Added a new deck

Being a lizard has gotten a lot harder. People know about the deck, about its main pathways to victory and how to avoid most of its removal. Still feels oppressively good when you get to curve out, but a lot less so when you don’t. Your opponent knowing your exact deck list doesn’t help either when you’re trying to get value out of your cards

Any solo deck is really difficult for Vaath to fight. Rev with ranged and celerity is a death sentence, and artifact vet is also a bit of a pain.

Thunder horn, second wish, and lost in the dessert (preferably bread pudding) are all big thorns in Vaath’s side as well. If people start playing guaj that’ll also be really annoying (hint: guaj with aegis barrier is immune to literally everything except three unused cards, one if you buff it above 5 health. I shudder at the thought of ever facing one).

Hope you can sleep tonight. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, there are a variety of ways to get rid of him, some better than others. Shroud, Lightbender, EMP, Repulsor Beast, Paddo, Ghost Lynx, Eternity Painter, Sandswirl Reader, and so on.
