Poll: Who wants Unranked back, AKA a way to play casually?

The patch has just hit but a big portion of players already miss Unranked.
Unranked allowed things like casual playing without competitive stress, memeing and deck testing and there’s no reason for it to disappear.
People played it a lot not just because some were missing Shimzar cards or rotated ones, but to feel free to fool around without consequences on their laddering, and putting together the modes is not the solution, so democratically I propose a poll:

  • Reinstate some form of an Unranked mode
  • Leave things how they are, without the Unranked mode

I see the problem in the lack of unranked mode, sure. But not in the recent state. What I think, and also some other guys on forums, is that you can just have Unranked mode with no separate queue, but dependant on your ladder rank instead. This will not result in wait time increase and also will probably be balanced a bit better.

Absolutely fine by me: in whatever form and shape there should be an Unranked mode, this is what’s the poll about  . I will change the poll option to “some kind of Unranked mode” to be coherent with what I actually mean.

I posted like half an hour ago… @ThanatosNoa could you help with this?

I think there should definitely be an unranked mode for testing decks and memeing it up without having to worry about your rank, and where you’re not going to run into the same meta decks constantly.

Specifically for the purpose of testing decks, an unranked mode doesn’t help. Decks have to be tested against highly optimized decks piloted by skilled players, which means running them in ranked.

@unreason : despite being just a partial consideration on the matter I brought up, which is ok, maybe for your experience it didn’t help but to me, regardless the quality of the opponent deck, testing decks in Unranked was way better than testing them in practice mode where the AI is ultra dumb.

@akurane could also help.

But you may add the explanation to OP instead.

I liked Unranked, but I’m also happy with its removal if it means Duelyst is healthier in the long run.

If they can find a way to do it on the same queue as Ranked that’s obviously the best option, for now. But I imagine it would take them a while (a few months at least) to figure out the details/mechanics of a change like that and code them into the game.

Alternatively, waiting until mobile is released and the playerbase (hopefully) increases and reintroducing it as a separate queue then.

Not gonna vote because I want them to bring it back later, but bringing it back right now would be a terrible idea.

IMO, Faeria handles unranked the best. When you que for a game, you can choose ranked or unranked, and its the same que! Except if I’m playing casual and you’re playing ranked, if you win you still get a win, if you lose you still get a loss! This is what I’d prefer for duelyst

ehhh with the broken combos of the rotation that could have been super toxic…

i mean imagine trying to get ranks when your opponent is playing cards you cant. shimzar thunderhorn, sphere tormentor, crescent spear, falcius, etc. it would feel bad

obviously they would make it the same card pool for both unranked and ranked…otherwise yes it would be not a good idea.

I fixed it (Please let me know off the wording is OK). Also quick tip: If you want a poll option to be changed, the votes must be set as private/not public (bc if not, you would basically be able to edit the poll so that you can misconstrue the views of people who have voted to the public)

I actually see no reason not to vote for the existence of unranked.

I mean, do the players playing in unranked worsen ladder experience somehow?

I personally didn’t play unlimited much. I played like 10 games. But I see no reason for it to not exist…apart from separation of playerbase, but that’s a different story.

You’re right that testing decks in Unlimited was better than testing them against the AI decks, but better isn’t the same as good. Gonna quote myself here:

This is the only good way to test a deck, besides recruiting a high-skill friend with optimized decks and playing friendly matches against a bunch of their decks several times each.

Thank you @akurane, all good  . Also I didn’t know about the private vote thing, I’ll remember for the future!

Sorry for double posting, apparently due to a problem with my poll editing I reached the limit so I couldn’t change the previous post to answer you @unreason:
This topic is about the existence or not of an Unranked mode, not trying to discuss if is good for tests or not, I’m not interested atm in that, so don’t get me wrong for saying this but one should use the Unranked however pleases them  .
Anyway, for the sake of discussing, I do agree that between AI, Unranked and Ladder, the latest one is the best way to test for the reasons you said, but it has the drawback of making you lose ladder positioning when beat/concede, and that is already a good reason for me to use Unranked for tests.

I haven’t seen anyone mention a reason to not have it that makes sense. I have seen people argue that someone’s reason for wanting it back was not valid, but no logical reason to not have it. All of this hand wringing about optimal ways to test decks is beside the point and a red herring. This is about casual vs competitive play period. Other uses beyond that are supplementary. I support the existence of both wholeheartedly.

there is exactly one reason not to have unranked mode, population size is not big enough to support it along with ranked and gauntlet

Just curious, as I know you’re a S/Ladder familiar, did you really struggle waiting a lot more for matchup in Ranked over the past 2 months than usual ?

yeah, queues have always been bad when you are really high up, but queue lengths that were only seen rarely at top 10 s had spread down into diamond and happened very frequently
