I know there was a patch for Sentinels recently, but this is still freaking me out. Why can Oni transform after it is killed by Banishing? It is simply not fair.

The issue has to do with how spell sentinels are coded in regards to when spell triggers go off, another example is you trying to ping or Lure a Oni on 1 HP, in which case it will transform before damage and thus survive.
Transformation effects are weird in this game as it appears they are coded in such a way to that minion effects last longer than they naturally should. For example lets say you cast Blood of Air on a Night Watcher, you’ll transform it into a dervish but here’s the thing, your dervish will enter the battlefield exhausted, despite Watcher no longer being in play.
It’s this discrepancy in the games coding that seems to be the root of your problem, and a large reason why some sentinels work in unintuitive ways.
At least the minion sentinels work like you would expect with Opening Gambits now.

They code all effects to happen before minion death. Which is why if you blood of air a tormentor they still get the dervish

Is this a typo or are you willingly undermining the discussion of the OP? Mindcage Oni/Banishing is an interaction that has still to be looked into. Why can it be that a kill spell doesn’t kill the target? In this special case it is even a 3-0 trade! This is not a rant but a reminder to the devs.
My point is that this has been brought up before and that Sentinels have many interactions that don’t make sense. Pretty sure there’s a list somewhere, but there hasn’t really been any word from the devs on fixing them, so I think as a player it’s important to keep these interactions in mind.
Also untransformed Basilysk with 1 HP and Demonic Lure. Dies to the ping, does not get moved to another tile and then transforms into a 5/5. smh

That is not true. From the latest patch notes: “Sentinels that trigger from minions being summoned will no longer trigger if they are already destroyed when a minion is summoned.”
That only applies to minion sentinels though. Spell sentinels interacting the way they do have been known for months, so either they are working as intended, or it’s simply a case of bad coding leading to them not being able to fix said interactions.

My second comment only said that it is not true that the devs are not fixing the interactions because they are. They haven’t done the sentinel ones and I don’t know if they will but they did something.
