New promotion similar to Humble Bundle?

Hi there folks,

With upcoming mobile app I think there’s time for another promotion similar to the free orb one when the Steam app was launched to generate more buzz about the game.

For a start, I think that Duelyst is all ready quite generous: basic set has good drop rates for legendaries, you accumulate gold at okay rate, cheap expansions and nice ladder rewards. But the problem is these require some work and don’t offer instant gratification and I know that some people really don’t like seeing rewards such as division bundles and boss crate keys that are locked behind paywalls. The main issue with is not the value of these, but that they don’t feel much rewards at all. Psychologically they can be a bit demoralizing. Here I think is where Duelyst could improve and having another launch promotion would be a good first step.

Shadowverse is a good example of a game that generated quite a bit of interest by handing out free stuff and maybe Duelyst could try to do the same when the mobile app launches? This may sound as if I’m just asking for free stuff, but my concern is really for the new players. :innocent: I know some didn’t like how CPG handled Humble Bundle promotion, so maybe this could be handled differently. What would you like to see?

yes plz moar free stuffz @Ryvirath

I don’t know someone who did like how it was handled.
The orbs were only usable by players who played the game for less than a week before the promotion. The promotion happened about 2 weeks after release so all the new players who started at the first week could not use the key.

Veterans couldn’t use it either, so you personally wouldn’t get much of it even if you asked for free stuff.

There was the black keeper of the vale skin that everybody got that’s about it.

I think that could be a great idea. A way to make new players more interested in the game in the first place and to keep them here. How to do it is a more interesting question because some people will always be disappointed.

With a time limit going back like 2, 3 or 4 weeks you always have people left out and these will complain.

Another option would be to look at the collection and everybody with less than e.g. 20% of the cards can use the code.

Or maybe different promotion codes…20 orbs for 1-2 weeks old accounts, 10 orbs for 3-4 weeks old ones, 5 for 5-6 weeks old ones.

But there will always be people who just missed the requirements to use the codes. I don’t know how to prevent that.

  1. you could give it to everyone, long time players already have all cards they don’t really care for some extra spirit coming their way.

  2. if you release the game while planning a promotion in the following few weeks, make it so that people who started playing on release could get it not just delay it by a week to get hundreds of new players who barelly started playing unable to get it.

There is a middle ground between new players and long time players who
have all cards and in my opinion it wouldn’t be the best business
decision to give free orbs to everyone. I think people who have a good
amount of cards but not all by far would be less prone to pay with money
for orbs after getting 20 free ones.

I am sure they won’t repeat what happened with the Humble Bundle
promotion. That didn’t go very well…

i sure hope they don’t.

well paying gives most benefit when you get all the set like the expansions or when you have very few cards so will not have duplicates. 20 orbs is not that much if you get many duplicates.

they could just give one of the expansion for free for all players at some point. it would make it easier to compete for newer players and more experienced players likely have the expansion anyway by then so it would balance itself nicely.

Yes, that is true, $20 for a whole expansion is a better deal than just
15 orbs. But 20 orbs for free are around $27 worth. CPG has to decide if
they want to give that away (of course not every player would invest
that money).

I expect them to make RotB craftable at some point to make it easier for
newer players but that still takes some time.

making it craftable could help.
i think that making the 3rd oldest expansion craftable or free for new players could be good to make the game more accessable for new players. (that is if they continue releasing none craftable expansions once every 2-3 months.)

those who like it are going to support it in one way or in the other, even adverticing it to their friends won’t hurt, it is still largely unknown game and increasing player base will increase the revenue eventually.
