New generals' art compared to the others'

Hello! My name is Daalma and I’m a Duelyst player from Spain.

It’s been really amazing to see the new generals in play. Tought, I was looking forward to seeing how would CP implement their artworks in order to feel like part of the game. And I’ve noticed they are really different! They feel really new and with a different painting technique, and I feel the previous ones are obsolete compared to these.

So I suggest at least, before adding each general stickers of mark II skins, to update the other general artworks for the deck icon and when finding battle to upgrade the general visuals of the game. I can understand some of you could disagree with me, because is not a really important thing that doesn’t affect gameplay, but art for me is really important, so please be respectful with your comments.
Comment what do you thing here down. See you!

The new generals would fit in perfectly if they:

  • Didn’t have glowing eyes
  • Faced fully forwards like all other generals.
  • Looked a bit more calm.

Overall, its just the new generals’ portraits looking like they’re on fire while the older ones look calm and composed.

Posting here just to express my agreement. I don’t like this art inconsistency.

After seeing how much the new portraits POP, it makes the old ones lackluster in comparison.

Though I prefer the less pronounced portraits to the new ones

Just chiming in to say that I prefer the older art style. The clash in styles is a small problem, but it is something I don’t like.

What on earth is going on with Shidai’s eyes? O___o

this is so true. The new artworks during the loading screens have very glaring differences. It’d be time for a visual update tbh. Good thread.

I personally like the older art work the new ones are. Bright but look so funny to me.

or they look more active

I agree with many of these folks as well; I prefer the old generals art style. I really don’t care for the new generals looks, but that’s just an opinion. The inconsistency is an issue for me too, but I’m kind of picky about things like that.

The original six generals are amazing to me artistically. They are a huge part of what drew me into the game. Normally I gravitate towards one or two characters in a game with choices like this one, but while there was one standout for me personally, the other five were all very well drawn and absolutely captured my attention from the very beginning.

The second set of generals are a mixed bag for me. Their actual art is still very good and if it’s not drawn by the same artist/artists, it’s done very well in an attempt to maintain a similar style. The overall design of those second generals and this third set stuck me slightly odd when introduced because to me they look like they’re…overshadowing the original generals. They have bigger/more weaponry, more armor…they seem more flashy to me than the first six and, just for me personally, I wish these last twelve had stayed more in-line with the starters.

Just thoughts. I certainly can’t say I could’ve done better in terms of design or art production.

I’d attribute this to the animation and sprite work getting better over time, and they can do bigger weirder things with it so they’re going to do it. I don’t see a reason to redesign the old generals, especially not their sprites in game, but the portrait art has always been harped on by critics and people seem to like the new stuff a lot. Redrawing them in the new, more dynamic style could bring those old generals to life in a new, unexpected way!

Don’t get me wrong in game they look awesome.
