Meme Pets, would love ideas to reach a 50% win rate

https://play.duelyst.com/replay?replayId=-LDrI1sN13tA5WcJE5wd

With Thunderhorn recent nerf there is a tiny window to actually get a few matches where Thunderhorn isn’t played. (This won’t last, but was well worth the lulz for a tiny bit)

Decklist:

No it isn’t that great, but would love ideas on improving the general idea. If you watch that tiny match (if the link works) there some neat tricks with Sol for basically Rush pets. And calculators can be huge early.

Pets are inherently complicated. While I’m a lowly silver ranked player, I do know that the more complicated something is, the less likely it is to be successful. I know that’s not an answer but perhaps it is help

It’s easier just to link the pic

I would imagine that the trouble of a deck like this would be the fact that, unless you have Zukong out, your opponent can easily manipulate your minions into unfavourable situations and trades.

Yes, that definitely happens. With shimzar back, I get a sense that a buff for battle pets might come. Otherwise, they have a large pool of cards not really doing anything. So in a tiny way this is just screwing around with them on the side for that possibility. I was Underwhelmed with Zukong since with the current meta there really isn’t any time to play a 3/4 and have it survive two turns before you actually get any use out of him.

I would think about adding Flash and Rebuke to the deck. With Flash you could as player 2 turn 1 summon Rawr and another pet due to the Flash damage. Giving you a strong opener. Rebuke would act as removal as well as a possible card draw along side Hydrax. Since if you kill your own battle pets with Hydrax on board you draw cards. Don’t know how the Flash interaction with Calculator would work though. But could possibly be very interesting.

Hydrax dies to Rebuke though? Or does it still draw cards while it dies?

I like the idea of flashed rawrs. Hydrax can survive rebuke I hadn’t thought about possibly getting the draws while clearing board. Calculator is highly enjoyable when you have a Couple yuns in hand. When the calculator drops as a 10/8 or often higher for 4 then its worth the funny long pause you get when they realize its a pets deck.

Don’t know, I’m assuming you would use it while Hydrax still has 4 health if possible.

Ah it was among the buffed cards then? Cool :stuck_out_tongue:

This replay is hilarious. Calculator is crazy good and the rest of your deck is a looney tunes theme park. I’m in awe.

Drop Hydrax, Calculator and probably Upper Hand. Add some Magmar staples like Makantor. Boom, working meme deck.

My suggestion is to run battle pets out of Starhorn since you will be burning through your hand way faster than your opponent in a pet deck.

The cards I found to be critical to this strategy is Thraex. I like to focus on boosting power for battle pets. This makes it easier for your cheap and expendable battle pets to trade with another unit, plus the damage to the opposing general adds up quickly.

All things being fair, I do not think battle pets need to take up your entire deck. They are fine as a subtheme. You could very easily combine them with other plans like a replace shell with white widow, or with the very generically good decimus spikes combo. An example:

You don’t need the rawr at all, but it is very fun to play with it. The cards that I find core to this strategy are Rex, Gro, Golden mantella, Thraex, Razor skin and Nature’s confluence. Back in the day, Chrysalis burst would also have been on the list as a core card. Copying that or nature’s confluence with loreweaver was pretty amazing.

What about endure the beastlands and moloki? Used to be fun. specially when you get oni, 5/5 forcefield op

I hadn’t tested that before, but I do like endure the beastlands in a deck that will dump large numbers of scrappy units on the board. Certainly something to try.

There are some nice interactions here. I was trying to avoid just throwing battle pets with decimus/spikes because, it basically becomes just a bad spikes deck & not really a pets deck. I have a good spikes deck already so it just feels weird to take out good cards just to “sorta” play pets.

There are a ton a battle pets in the deck in order to proc calculator. so that he’s huge. While not great… it definitely gives you more of the “pets” feel when you drop a pet themed win/con.

I am more than happy to throw some Makantor’s in, I found I don’t really have a spot for hydrax because of speed issues (same with wukong). Unfortunately when I drop calculator too, (I tried this) it sorta doesn’t really feel like pets anymore. Just a bad Magmar deck lol. (Not that pets isn’t lol)

I think you will find that there just aren’t enough battle pet cards that are worthwhile to make a focused battle pet deck. The only battle pets I found worthwhile to run in magmar are Rex, Gro and Koi. And I don’t really like Koi nowadays. The two spells are great though.

You will need to branch out to another strategy because you have the room to do so and because just battle pets has a couple of big issues.

I made a Starhorn pet swarm deck that reached Diamond pretty easily before the rotation (and while Thunderhorn was running rampant). It basically runs a ton of pets and cheap minions and Mandrake. I use Fractal Replication for Mandrake or use Lady Locke to summon a couple of Provoke Mandrakes.

So just try something with a ton of cheap pets/minions and Mandrake and see how it goes
