I stumbled upon this video and wanted to share it. The video is one hour long but the second half of it is mostly answering questions, so you only need to watch the first half.
Tl;Dr: adding luck to existing and “established” games turns away previously invested players. Luck in games can be a great way to broaden the audiance. Luck can protect egoes of “immature” players, they praise their skill when winning and curse luck when losing. Games have a tendency of luck reduction as the game becomes more competitive and the community “matures”.
Perhaps this video has the answers to why cards like Meltdown and Kron were introduced. Perhaps the developers introduce RNG cards to broaden the playerbase and keep it, and perhaps, luck factor will play less of a role in the future. Perhaps we as a community, are not yet mature enough to enjoy the true competitive potential this game has to offer. Also, this sort of aligns with what Hearthstone is doing, slowly retiering RNG heavy expansions now that they have a huge player base. What do you think?
