List of Archetypes hurt by first rotation/core set changes

I’d like to have a list of Archetypes that will get hurt with the first rotation hitting when the next expansion releases. We know that some tools for said archetypes may be offered in the future, but for now, they seem to be preparing to be hit! Some more than others.
The following will be my tentative list for said archetypes, divided in factions, along with the rotated/removed cards that will cause great grief upon their players (please add any ones I’m missing in the comments!):

LYONAR

  • Divine Bond: Afterblaze, Dioltas.
  • Midrange and Tempo: Sun Wisp, Afterblaze.
  • Titan: Solarius.
  • Healyonar: Blistering Skorn.

SONGHAI

  • Songhai in general: Katara (no more sick backstab OTK combos for a year, I guess)
  • Mantra: Crescent Spear.
  • Eight Gates: Crescent Spear.
  • Baconator: Mirror Meld.
  • Midrange Kaleos: Onyx Jaguar.
  • Midrange and Control: Battle Panddo, Ki Beholder.

VETRUVIAN

  • Vetruvian in general: Falcius.
  • Obelysk: Whisper of the Sands, Allomancer, Nimbus (?).
  • Control Ciphyron: Psychic Conduit.
  • Dervish: Pax.

ABYSSIAN

  • Abyssian in general: Sphere of Darkness.
  • Lurking Fear: Lurking Fear.
  • Aggro: Ooz.
  • Control Cass: Ooz, Klaxon, Obliterate, Ghost Azalea.
  • Swarm: Gor, Void Steal.
  • Maehv in general: Prophet of the White Palm, Gnasher.
  • Reliquarian: Arcane Devourer.

MAGMAR

  • Magmar in general: Thumping Wave.
  • Midrange and Keeper: Sunsteel Defender, Dioltas (?).
  • Eggmar: Lava Lance, Wild Inceptor, Morin-Khur, Dreadnought.
  • Zoo: Razor Skin, Rex, Gro, Mandrake, Nature’s Confluence.
  • Growmar: Gro, Moloki Huntress.

VANAR

  • Vanar in general: Aspect of Shim’zar (THUNDERHORN NERF, BABYYY).
  • Vespyrs: Vespyric Call, Iceblade Dryad, Snow Rippler, Huldra (yes, there’s a card with that name).
  • Control/Walls: White Asp, Winter’s Wake.
  • sPiCiEsT mEmEs: Lightning Blitz :frowning:

NEUTRAL

  • Battlepets: all battlepets and their synergies (Thunderhorn already deleted this, but I thought it was worth mentioning? lul).
  • Replace memes: Inquisitor Kron.
  • Midrange decks: Sunsteel Defender, Dioltas, Blistering Skorn (RIP).

Here’s hoping Songhai gets some good 3 drops next expansion otherwise mid-range will blink out of existence.

Jaguar’s rotation will just affect meme decks.

Katara rotation won’t be too bad since even I have stopped running backstab, but still, RIP best 1 drop in the game.

Sunsteel and Dioltas rotating also hurts mid-range songhai because of few quality 4 drops (Magi and Wreath don’t count). Somehow, though, I think it will be fine as long as we get some 3 drops.

I disagree, my Kaleos deck works well with Jaguar which isn’t a meme deck. It might be a meme card but its actually a good card as well. But its the only card in that deck that rotates out and it can work without it so I’m not worried.

They’re the same deck except mantra is an optional wincon in 8g8s.

They’re still rotating it out, along with funsteel and dioltas.

I guess you can consider it the same archetype, but Mantra puts a lot more emphasis in running as little spells as possible. 8g8s decks can allow themselves to run some minions as long as they are helpful to their gameplan of early control + late combo destruction. My version of 8g8s runs stuff like Cryptographer, Geomancer and that owlbeast that draws copies of your BBS for some late game SMOrc-ing.

I agree on everything except for the Jaguar thing. It’s a niche minion, but it has its viable place. And I especially agree on the Songhai 3-drop deficit… I’ll suffer the loss of Battle Panddo sooo much. It’s one of my fav 3-drops in the game!

I wouldn’t class Afterblaze as a Divine Bond card, more of a Midrange or Brome swarm card. Lyo also loses Sun Wisp which can work in multiple decks.

Other than that, I think you have everything covered.

Well, I can totally see why. It’s not very menacing by itself, but it can definitely be the most overwhelming card in the game when it gets big grow minions off…

I’m wondering what 3 drop I should use instead of Falcius in my golem deck. Maybe Golem Vanquisher?

I’m not saying it’s exclusively a Bond card, but it’s definitely one that can be seen in that archetype. Especially when it runs Owlbeast sage! I’m going to add your suggestions, though, they’re very accurate :grinning:

It’s not bad, but really easy to answer. I heard of someone running Lady Locke to combo with Sirocco… that sounds super spicy lol.
Falcius is a bit too versatile to effectively substitute, I’m afraid. You’ll have to experiment!

By the way, Lady Locke sounds perfect for the a meme deck. I’ll definitely try it out when i get the spirit.

Songhai’s best 3 drop has always been Sojourner anyway.
