Ladder format ideas?

This is just an idea I’ve had for a different mode in duelyst and I’m just scouting to see if there is much interest. There are 2 different versions of it, one is a more traditional ladder type the other is slightly more complex, but both have been a lot of fun to participate in for other games that I play.

The more traditional mode is you have a list of people in your ladder, ranked from top to bottom, people lower on the ladder issue challenges to those higher and if successful they move up to that spot (limitations on how far up you can chalange can be put in place so that everyone isn’t just going for the top person all the time), this tends to be a perpetual thing, but you can do stuff like give points for defending top spot or something if you want to have an eventual winner (have it be a monthly thing or something).

The other system is more complex but also I think is more fun, you play anyone in the group of players to start with, you get 4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, and 1 for a loss (these are just example numbers) when you reach 20 points you can challenge for a title (the first 3 people don’t have to challenge as there is nobody there at the start). When you have the 3 title holders the lowest one can challenge the middle one and the middle one can challege the top one. The person from the pool with 20 points can only challenge the lowest title holder, if they succeed then they take their place and the previous title holder goes back into the pool, if the challenger fails they lose their points and have to try again later. Points again can be given for title defense if you want an overall winner if it ever ends, but the idea is that the system can be perpetual.

Are these good formats? would people be interested in them? any thoughts on improving them? feedback would be greatly appriciated.

well, the first one would need someone (preferably a computer program) to constantly update the ladder. thats the only problem i see with it besides getting people to join in the first place.

the second one has the same problems as the first, but seems far more arbitrary. for example, somebody could just stick in the pool and keep winning without challenging the title holders, then the title holders would (could) be doing absolutely nothing the entire time to hold their titles. and if the holder takes the title, does that mean that the lower title is now free to the new guy or does the loser take it? cause the first way means people just dont accept challenges near the end to keep their position and the other way means that the same 3-5 people are probably gonna be on top the entire time.

yes, having a system in place would be ideal, but I was hoping that people would just be honest in reporting the results, and obviously anything like this needs people to join it.

these are good points about the second system, it would be the second option, and the other place that used this had a handicap system to keep things balanced which doesn’t exist in duelyst, so that is a pretty big flaw here.

Thanks for your thoughts on this though
