Duelyst Forums

Is Duelyst dying? :(

This is all part of the natural cycle of a collectible card game.

  1. New platform release = influx of a LOT of new players.
  2. New expansion release = influx of some new players.
  3. Big marketing push = influx of some new players.
  4. Downtime as they work on the next #1 and #2 = slow decline of existing players.

You see the same thing in every card game on the market - on a scale relative to those games’ player bases.

Currently we are in #4 and will remain there until the next #1 or #2 at which time we will see an influx of players again.

You do know that duelyst lost 90% of her player base on steam despite the new expansion.

It’s not the expansion that is the problem, the problem is not delivering things that have been promised for a tear and a half now.

Look at the new update, this shit is a fucking joke.
I’m sick of it… i supported and funded duelyst from the start, and right now they throw a bad of dicks at our face.

That’s not accurate. The last expansion released in July and, according to steam charts, the game received a 79% gain in peak players relative to the #s before the expansion when it released.

Each month since then it’s been about a ~25% decline, which is the same rough monthly percentage decline you see in other CCGs like Faeria between expansion releases.

Also, these are just the steam numbers. Is this 1 to 1 with the Windows client? Who knows.

If I were involved in the business of Duelyst and it was my decision to focus on more frequent content updates vs. new platform releases at the expense of new content for a while, I would push to get on new platforms first and then try to get back to more frequent content updates.

That said, I would also be transparent about that choice to the community so they weren’t left in the dark.

Well at least there’s no-one alienating half the potential player base on the forums

Wow this thread is still going. The playerbase unrest is real.

I understand your reasoning for believing this topic is dying, but it seems there’s still a sufficient amount of activity here to keep it going for some time to come. Clearly, we need to be logical about this and not let personal bias cloud our eyes. Confirmation bias can distort your view of reality in ways that will change your actions for the worse.

A game is either thriving, dying or dead. Unless its obvious that it’s thriving, you only have so many alternatives.

Don’t forget Schrodinger’s game that is both dead and alive

Some games are none of those (a single player game for example), so if there’s a very easy other possibility found, maybe those are not the only possibilities.

Like, a game having a temporary slump, for example. Or the phase before it becomes thriving.
Etc.

Many more points on the life-curve of a MP game exist.

After I posted, I considered a plateau option. However, if the plateau lasts too long it will start to die.

That’s only when you can’t see tho

I’ve been around since alpha and frankly these posts have happened every few months since duelysts initial release. It’s a good game that was plagued with a ton of power creep for quite some time, and the meta is finally in a healthy place after months of printing overturned cards and broken mechanics.

In that time many of the main players who regularly posted on the forum left. Or stopped interacting with the community all together. There used to be people regularly streaming the game, that’s pretty much gone now. Or rather it’s now a bit different.

It’s silly to say the game is dying because for the most part it’s already pretty dead. I used to only wait about 5 seconds for every match, now sometimes I’m waiting upwards of 2 minutes. The player base isn’t what it used to be, and CPG’s earlier mistakes cost them huge amounts of veteran players.

Scarzig still streams it. Tournaments should start again though, that was great to watch.

It’s extremely rare I have to wait longer than 20 seconds, maybe you live in a unfortuitous timezone?

He is probably from Europe, just like me. Does that count as an “unfortunate timezone”?. Have waiting times > 1 minute fairly often and yeah even 2+ minutes sometimes. One of my games today for example almost had 2,5 minutes waiting time.

Nope because I am Europe too.

Very odd then.

Ah wait… it might depend on ladder rank as well.
Or is it Gauntlet?

Nope, barely play Gauntlet, only ladder. When do you play usually? I always play in the evening, around 6 PM GMT and my waiting times are on a constantly high level since May or something like that. I am not even that high ranked right now, just rank 6.

Same rank as me then… well… eh, I play either around 1 pm or something like 8 pm through 11 pm.

Brussels time.
