Hi guys, Excogitator here, and we all know that the next set will be the first set to usher in rotation. These pre-rotation sets are the most important sets in a card game’s lifespan, since they present a chance to either draw in a bunch of new/returning players by adding something novel and exciting or driving away a bunch of current players by pressuring them to get new cards and invalidating most of their collection.
The rotation expansions of something like Hearthstone have been, by common consensus, the best expansions in the game. No doubt the Duelyst team will try to make something amazing for its first rotation.
This leads me to my last point about why most of the newly revealed units appear to use martial arts of some sort. From an aesthetic view, this doesn’t make much sense. Why add these humanoids who use more plain physical moves when you have already added crazy sprites breathtakingly over the top attack animations? However, when you consider that these “fighter” units share some mechanic, this makes a lot more sense. My personal prediction is that these fighters trigger some sort of fighting mini-game when they enter combat. The damage they deal/take is reflected by how well you do in the mini game. This could be the “hook” that Duelyst needs to survive rotation. Maybe this is crazy, and couldn’t fit in a card game, but CPG is the company who printed battlepets, so I’m sticking to my bet here.
