[Insane Theory] Why the fighting units?

Hi guys, Excogitator here, and we all know that the next set will be the first set to usher in rotation. These pre-rotation sets are the most important sets in a card game’s lifespan, since they present a chance to either draw in a bunch of new/returning players by adding something novel and exciting or driving away a bunch of current players by pressuring them to get new cards and invalidating most of their collection.

The rotation expansions of something like Hearthstone have been, by common consensus, the best expansions in the game. No doubt the Duelyst team will try to make something amazing for its first rotation.

This leads me to my last point about why most of the newly revealed units appear to use martial arts of some sort. From an aesthetic view, this doesn’t make much sense. Why add these humanoids who use more plain physical moves when you have already added crazy sprites breathtakingly over the top attack animations? However, when you consider that these “fighter” units share some mechanic, this makes a lot more sense. My personal prediction is that these fighters trigger some sort of fighting mini-game when they enter combat. The damage they deal/take is reflected by how well you do in the mini game. This could be the “hook” that Duelyst needs to survive rotation. Maybe this is crazy, and couldn’t fit in a card game, but CPG is the company who printed battlepets, so I’m sticking to my bet here.

Hopefully not, I don’t want a mini game in Duelyst besides Frost fire or similar

dex-oni-yun mini game confirmed :snowchaser:

but seriously, i think its just going to be a knock back effect or something (which i’m actually surprised they haven’t implemented yet as it plays into the whole positioning thing immensely)

Yeah, I also think it’s related to positioning. What you say is sensible, but there are other possibilities as well. For instance, these units may have higher stats / powerful effect but be constrained to attack only the units in front of them.

What I know for sure is that I’m eagerly waiting for news

I just hope not. QTE should be kept as far from Dooli as possible.

Also, Imo the most amazing thing they could do is SUDDENLY not doing rotation.

Nah, CPG hates admiting they made mistakes, otherwise Phantasm, Cryogenesis, Taygete, Heaven’s Eclipse, Metamorphosis, Artifact Hunter and Twilight Sorcerer would all be back at full power.

I hope that the new keyword will be something interactive or position related, not like bloodsurge/bond. This expansion NEEDS to be great due to the rotation and my hopes are pretty big.

My bet is the new keyword will be a knock back effect and will push the enemy minion in the opposite direction of the attack until there is an obstacle (either an unit or the end of the board) dealing 2 damage for all the spaces traveled and the same to whatever unit gets hit by the knocked minion.

What happened to artifact Hunter an twilight sorcerer?

2 damage per tile is op. Think about it. A 2/4 could kill an ironcliffe from the middle of the board. Even without the extra damage it would make getting multiple backstabs with songhai possible or just moving provokes out of the way and valuable targets into range of other minions.

Twilightsorcer used to cost 4 and artifact hunter uses to be a 3/5.

Could you show some examples of the " fighting units " you’re talking about? I don’t understand what you’re talking about

It seems there is a common pattern in the teasers for the next expansion, i.e., the introduction of a melee unit for each faction. By “melee” I mean a brawling unit, which uses punches to attack. These are the fighting units in the title

Happy cakeday!

I also realized that @excogitator was right, how could wind strikers double jet thingies do half the damage as snowchasers twirl? (Is the twirl considered a fighting technique?)
