I want to talk to community about card descriptions

Hey, guys.

As it seems, reproaching Devs for unclear card descriptions is becoming a trend now more than ever. Here and on Discord I see too many replies doing so.

I assume the trend started with Munch text which was obviously a complete mess, but now imo many of you are going too far. Nothing is ideal, balance between readability, clearness and brevity is hard to archieve, but please, don’t act too harsh.

What I have in mind is that if we express dissatisfaction with every other card text at the end we will have as much credibility as the boy who cried wolf. And we lose the necessary power to express our dissatisfaction with truly messed up cards and be heard.

Also, Devs still do great job. Respect that, please.

Sorry for placing myself in the mentor position, but please, just think about the topic.

With all due respect,

Alplod.

the devs do a great job. but sometimes they fall short of the quality we have come to expect from them. the fact we can name these on one hand with a roster of 700 soon to be 800 cards actually says a lot in their favor. but some slight tweaks in the wording, even without any other changes would go a long way to keeping everything top notch

There are not many cards I have troubles with, I think the developers do a good job on average. There are a few cards with a very unclear description, but this can be easily addressed by rewording and I hope CPG will listen the community feedback on them, specifically on Munch and the Vanar artifact which are obviously misleading.

I’m fine with stuff like “devour a minion”, BUT these cards should be complemented by a tooltip with a card explanation of what the flavour text means. As I said, “discoverable” is only good for experience players who take the game light and annoying for all the other players.

These are all the concerns I presently have…

For me the only issue I have is with cards whose effects are unclear due to the wording. As mentioned Munch was one of them and it was difficult to decipher its effect intuitively.

Cards like Grand Strategos however, who use text like “promote your minions”, I actually quite enjoy. I feel like the text sounds a lot cooler this way than simply stating: “your minions transform into a Lyonar minion that costs one more mana”. However I do think the the effect should be made clear when hovering over the card so that cards like this can be understood before they are played, instead of vice versa.

Dagona? LeTigress? Sentinels? If there’s a trend it started multiple expansions ago tbh.

But yes, this is something i strongly believe deserves debate and critique, new player experience aside, you cannot use “digital design space” as a excuse for badly worded templates and effects that just flat out don’t do what they say on the card. It’s amateurish and something we should nip in the bud before this just becomes the next normal.

I want to have a “Ruling” button directly next to the “Crafting” one in the Collection menu. With an extra submenu where you can click on the card to get a text log that explains the card further where the Decks are normally shown.

Have a notepad feature so you can give small discriptive hover over edits to your own damn cards.

Devs don’t have to do shit, I’ll undiscover this shit myself.

This could help.
Especially if the words created like that because of not enought space. Just explain the detail effect in tooltip.

Agreed on the vague/weird descriptions. I’ve also noticed some inconsistencies. Keywords aren’t always in bold, Attack isn’t always capitalized when referring to the stat. I feel like there should be a card text style guide so there’s more consistency in the ability explanations.

Well, I should have predicted that this topic would actually enhance critisism towards card descriptions.

My bad :frowning:

If it makes you feel better, @calebtenrou, @beelakor and @eurasianjay all made good feature suggestions, so the topic is productive.
