Getting Tilted, a short guide on how to avoid it

##What is getting tilted?

For those who don’t know, getting tilted is pretty much the worst. You lose one game to a particularly gimmicky or annoying strategy (see: Abyssian v Sajj), sometimes not even losing, just getting annoyed by it, and it starts taking up your mind. You can’t stop thinking about that one Kelaino in the corner, and you end up playing worse. And as you play worse and worse you keep losing, and you start to blame it on more gimmicks (Mechaz0r, Chrysallis Burst, etc.) and the cycle keeps repeating itself until you go insane.

It blows.

Obviously, the easiest way to not do this is to take a break for a while as soon as you start getting tilted, but that’s not always an option. Sometimes you have to be like me and grind for gold, and there’s only two days left. Hell, I should be grinding right now, but I wanted to help some people out.

###Method 1

Laugh. Really, this helps me. Don’t take anything seriously. Be a memelord. Try for gimmicks because they’re funny, enjoy what you do. Make the opponent emote at you. Whatever you need to do to have a good time.
###Method 2

Be a tryhard. Only focus on winning. Play decks with gimmicks, hell, even play Abyssian. Winning is the only thing that matters. The more you think about winning the match, the less you think about how you lost the last one.

###Method 3

Only focus on the current game. Forget your goals, aside from just winning this game. Then after that, pull a DJ Khaled and do “another one. And another one. And another one” and so forth.

###Method 4

Whatever works for you. Make your own method! These are just the ones that have worked for me, and for others I know.

##Conclusion

Tilting is a serious problem where I come from (Melee, Pokemon Showdown), and I can see that it’s a huge problem here too. Most salt seems to come from cheese and RNG, and this game has a lot of both.

TL;DR: Don’t get tilted kids.

really nice hidden hate message right there.

Cool post! I typically tilt quite a lot, though I understand it’s just plain stupid. I observed that I tilt the most during the weekend, when I actually have more free time. It may sound weird, but when I come back home after a hard day of work, it’s much harder for me to tilt despite the higher level of stress. I think the reason is that I’m actually spending some free time on something I like, rather than getting crazy at work.

So, let me add Method 5: play after doing something which really stresses you, and you will have a much easier time when playing the game  This is a proactive advice against tilt, rather than reactive.

How to not tilt- grow up.

Simple as that.

Just imagine when mobile goes live we gonna thrice fold these posts… Oh what a time to be alive.

Here’s a thought it’s not like Donald trump great but losing is a thing it happens. It’s a card game so chance plays a huge factor in it but so does ur deck building and playing. How about you learn from ur loss and try and get better instead of crying or looking up self help books. Just a thought I hear people are saying.

Maybe the world up on that high horse isn’t the same as the one down here, what do I know?

What’s wrong with playing Abyssian? It’s not even the best faction right now. Besides, creep stall infinite heals is a totally kind and forgiving deck :smiling_imp:.

I think it’s part of our way to be, it’s not really as simple as that. Of course, one has better reasons in his life to be upset, but I would lie if I didn’t admit that I broke at least a couple of mouses when playing computer games…

This is an in general statement NOT directed at you or anyone in particular, but in the vast majority of cases when a person is prone to tilting they fall into one of two categories-

  1. Immature. Possibly but not always because they’re young.

Or

  1. Emotional and/or psychological issues. Sometimes this is very closely linked to an individual’s maturity level and in other more serious cases it is less closely linked.

In all but the most serious cases (meaning the ones in which there are bigger issues and the individual legitimately needs professional help) the answer is to improve one’s self-discipline, self-control and anger-management. I chose to paraphrase this in my original post by saying “grow up”. If you’re getting angry enough at a game to break things or get upset for more than two minutes it strongly speaks to a lack of maturity.

I most definitely disagree with this. Tilt doesn’t necessarily mean you smash your controller/keyboard or scream. Just because you can control your anger doesn’t mean that the anger disappears, or doesn’t effect your play. I’ve seen players of all ages tilt on every sort of game there is.

Being tilted does not mean doing those. It means playing in a sub-optimal mindset, which leads to losses, which leads to more tilting. The actual old archaic definition means something to the effect of “you get so pissed off you start leaning over your keyboard, looking tilted.” So really, you’re making irrelevant points.

I was using extreme examples to illustrate the points but the point themselves are solid. If someone is getting upset enough over a game to where they are thrown off and playing worse, that is their own immaturity and lack of emotional control.

This just isn’t true. Pretty much everyone gets tilted, even if they don’t realize it, and this likely includes you.

Instead of simply telling 99% of the entire gaming community to just ‘grow up’ why not let these guys talk about how they deal with it? I know which sounds more productive and helpful to me.

My intentions are always pure, even if they’re not always received as such. I believe the way to not tilt is to self-improve. Develop superior emotional control, more maturity and the ability to take a breath, put things in perspective and refocus yourself. These are life skills more likely to be found in an adult than an adolescent.

I agree that self control is something we should all seek.
But adults not getting tilted and having self control is a myth.
Saying you getting tilted is immature is just rude and not true, don’t you get frustrated too? At work, while doing stuff, whatever?

And yet there’s the entire community of adult gamers that get tilted…

Really don’t know why I bother saying anything at this point, I think the community speaks for itself, and it’s obvious when statements don’t hold up to facts.

OBVIOUSLY adults get tilted. Some adults are immature. This should go without saying. Emotional control is not everyone’s strong point.

Don’t you see, he’s trying to tilt you irl. Either way, just don’t bother, you’d be better off talking to a wall.
