Game And Comunity Interaction

Every game has its community. The game cannot exist without a one. But the same is true the other way around. If there was no game, there was nothing for community to form around.

The suggestion i am going to talk about will be about the ways for community to impact the game even more than they already do.

The sugestion is about card design contest.
This is a great way to get some interesting consepts for card as well as bring the community toghether.
But why souldnt we get it on another level, increasing the award for winning the contest?

So my suggestion is: the person, who wins the card design contest, gets his/her card designed and put into the game. Or gets to design a different card with CPG.

Now, i know that is a lot to ask and i dont say that this sould be made real 100%. This will require a lot of additional resources and time form the CPG. And this will delay the card releases and/or might result in one faction having more cards then the other ones. Also this might affect only more active players and leaving out the ones that dont use forums as much. In order to avoid that the game would need to have an in-game way to inform the player about the contest, which would , again require more work which could be done to make some battle maps, cards or new factions.

The other aspect of this change is “inspiration”. The usual player like myself changed the game, created a new archtype or shifted the meta. And I can do the same.

I would like to point out that design contest already has rewards (orbs, keys and design god badge). But i would like the card desgin contest to be more of a theory crafting place restricted to forum.

I chose the design contest instead of Tuesday Tournament because it is more accessible in terms of time. But something like this could also be done for Tournaments aswell.

So what are your thoughts? Would you participate in card design contests if they had that type of reward? Would you like to see something like this come to life?[poll public=true]

  • I would like to see something like this to either tournaments or other types of contests.
  • I would like the game to concentrate more on the cards.
  • I think this is not necessary.

well if you look at previous contests and cards released since then i think you’ll find that some of those cards have made it into the game, though not entirely intact

one design contest the winner was a magmar artifact that dealt 2 damage for each card your opponent draws, a little while later decimus comes out, a neutral minion that deals 2 damage for each card your opponent draws.

Tbh, CP is already doing a great job on the cards they release and although I want some of the cards from the card design contest to be implemented, it is their game and they decide whether or not they want those cards to be included. To have them be obligated to implement a card inside of their own game from a community-based contest isn’t something I’d like to condone.

I agree with you, but this is more about making it obvious and setting a clearer goal for the participants.

You voted not necesssary on your own poll

These contests are run by the community, not the dev team. So if CPG guaranteed putting the winning card into the game, the balance of the card is completely up to the community, which isn’t something they’d like to do.

I would love to see this, but I don’t think it could ever happen. Besides, CPG already looks at and takes inspiration from contest cards, which is phenomenal. Decimus was a Magmar spell created for a monthly contest, if I remember correctly.

What’s unclear about the goal for the contest? Prizes and judging criteria are listed very clearly.

Magmar Artifact. Come on baby, I made it and he tags it in every post. :stuck_out_tongue:
I thought you knew me better than that.

Thats why i said “design a card with a winner”, not “put the winner card ino the game”, as it could have some balance issues, taking up design space and so on. The winner ould design a completly different card as long as CPG accepts it.

There isnt a goal. People participate mostly for fun. Prizes are just there as an encouragment.

But by highlighting the fact that you as a winner can change the game, you practicly say something like “do your best. We are watching. If you are creative enough you will be recognized by us.”

But it could aswell just make a contest a less fun event, but rather a tournament for developer’s attemtion, so there is that.

Again, i personally dont think that this is what Duelyst sould have, as it takes the game in a different direction. Ive just put it out for the community to disscuss.

In that case, what would be the difference between having a player design it versus having a developer at CP design it ?

Anyways, if what @oranos said is true, then they’re already taking inspiration from the community. Therefore not needing the input of the person who originally designed the card (original being restricted to the contest of course).

Putting cards into the game every time we have a design contest would probably become exhausting for the developers, and a big use of time and resources within CPG. That being said, I absolutely adore the idea of community designed cards being implemented. I think a worthwhile endeavor for both the community and CPG would be an entire expansion with a huge focus on community designed abilities and cards. It could have the same general format as the card design contests we have now, but on a huge scale. They could have forums for new keyword ideas, new mechanics, entire cards, or just an open forum where the community and devs would discuss balance. It would be like a crazy cool festival of dev interaction: all leading towards a grand prize of what ideas make it into the set. I for one, would love it.

It would be more about the player than the card itself. And there is a difference between designing card for a contest and making a card for the game. Consider it something like a design lesson for the winner of the contest, if you wish.
