Faction identities: Lyonar

Hey everybody, it’s time for me to start talking about Faction identity again.
I’m going to periodically make threads about each faction and see whether people have a good feel for them etc.
The point would be to see if the current state of the faction meets their intent and whether you’re satisfied with it.

For lack of a better description, I will be assuming CP’s intent for each faction is mentioned on their revamped site: https://duelyst.com/. We’ll be starting from left to right, each faction getting its own thread (unless nobody replies then just drop the idea alltogether of course). :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m also going to assume that the description here is CP’s design intent summarized for each faction, for lack of anything else concrete to go on.

Lyonar description:

The Lyonar Kingdoms are proficient close quarter fighters who use Provoke and Zeal establish a massive presence on the battlefield. Utilize their impressive healing prowess and you can whittle down your opponents in a war of attrition.

  1. Do you feel this is an accurate representation of the Lyonar faction in-game?
  2. Do you feel this is an accurate representation in the lore and aesthetics?
1+2) Do the mechanics and focal points of the faction/it’s main power reflect this description?
  3. What is Lyonar to you?

Now for some more specific questions
4)Do you think this is a good direction for the faction? (the above description)
5) What direction would you like to see them go in?
6) Do you find the two Generals’ playstyles are both distinct and suit the faction goal?
7) What are the iconic cards for the faction, in your opinion?
8) Are there cards that do not fit the Lyonar theme (whether this is your own internal theme or the one described) in your opinion?
9) How do you see Lyonar evolving in the future? (future expansions, mechanics)
10) do you think there are inherent aspects of the faction that are underutilized?

The idea is to get a general feel of what the population thinks of the faction.
If there are any question you think I’ve missed or could help me out, feel free to let me know.

Still very much feels like Lyonar. All the current playstyles, including Golems, Titans, and Healyonar (with or without Gold Vitriol) feel very aggressive and focused on close quarters brawling. In lore, gameplay, and visuals they are probably the most cohesive in the whole game.

Still, they’re the most boring by far.

If there was any thematic ground left to cover in later expansions, it would be angels and summoning of “holy” creatures. Airdrop is underutilized. Structures that create more Silverguards, a sense of building a Barracks or Stronghold to defend, siege weaponry, all untouched.

Counterplay, don’t mess up Lyonar like Abyssian, Vanar, Vetruvian, and Magmar. The Twin Empires are the strongest thematic pillars of the game, and I think they should keep getting whatever feels best thematically instead of filling in their weaknesses.

This,

all of this

They should be more than just statsticks and provoke

As long as it doesn’t push an aggro or uninteractive lyonar

Structures that creates more silverwards.

My Lyonar OTP mind: Yes why not?
My vidya design mind: Holy shit, there are shity unbalanced ideas, next comes this.

Not knights.

Squires.

There’s more than 1 silverguard minion

even better would be a way to upgrade a squire into a knight (like that furious wraithling card) it would be fun but probably not viable

Play an innocuous but hearty 1/4 for 1 only to get a 3/5 Provoke pseudo-Rush next turn?

That’ll never work.

Jokes aside, Ironcliffe Heart was pretty good while Slo was 0. Quite a swing with an early Aegis Barrier or Divine Bond.

Do you really think that a structure which generate a permanent 1/4 each turn on a deck which relies on having map control to use their most broken spells-effects its a good idea, really?

It should be a really high cost card, which will make it usseles on any Lyonar deck whit a natual mana curve.

This thread seems to have drifted off-topic pretty quickly. Agree that Lyonar is thematically strong, and I think Alabaster Titan is very strong design. I like that Zir’An does different stuff from Argeon. Maybe it’s slightly problematic that they (like the Abyssian generals) have so few minions in common - pretty much just Windblade, Silverguard Knight, and Ironcliffe, amirite?

As far as future direction goes, I like the anti-spell thing they’ve got going with aegis barrier, Titan, and that new minion whose name I can’t remember. It feels thematic and is probably good for the meta, too. I’d like to see that developed a bit further.

I wouldn’t be opposed to a nerf to holy crutch, tho. I get that Lyonar needs a comeback mechanic when it’s lost the board, but I don’t like how oppressive it is when the Lyonar player is ahead (looking at you, tempo Argeon).

Aslong stuff like makantor is around, you cant nerf holy immo

Well, yes, I’d also like to see a nerf to Makantor.

Heretics of the church are welcome here. The forums are vet country.

And Lyonar doesn’t have good minion diversity in my opinion to be the minion faction. Instead of big boy spells like holy immolation, I’d expect more diversity to the minion roster (specifically 4 and 5 drops, the value slot which often seems filled by neutrals. Lyonar should not need neutral 4 drops). Control Lyonar seems non existent unless you go basic excelcius.

Lyonar should see one or two more forcefield minions. Forcefield meta.
