Faction Concept: The Zhakaxor Cluster (2.0)

The Zhakaxor Cluster

This is a project I had to abandon a while back because I got busy for a while, and now I want to continue it. I fixed the Bioleech mechanic, reworked some awkward cards, and added the Shim’Zar, Bloodbound, and Prophecy expansions. (That’s almost 100 cards!) Feedback and suggestions are welcome as usual, and bonus points to whoever spots the Evangelion reference.


Visuals

The Zhakaxor Cluster are descendants of an ancient alien race. Therefore, they will have a very strange and distorted aesthetic, reminiscent of the beings depicted in Lovecraftian lore. They will also have a mechanical feel to their design, as they are hybrids of organic life and machine. Their color scheme will follow a strict black/white palette, with accents of brighter colors such as pink and teal.

Bloodbound Spell: Mutant Invasion
The enemy General summons a 0/1 Parasite on a random nearby space.

Design Explanation

Malthazar is a unique General who summons tokens for the enemy General. However, the Parasites live up to their name; they’re useless, malicious, and difficult to get rid of. As giving minions to the opponent can often be disadvantageous, especially against factions like Abyssian, many of the cards in this faction would be able to gain direct value from the Parasites your opponent controls.

Design Explanation

The Vortex Hyperwarp is essentially a teleportation gate in which friendly minions (but not the General) can move to, regardless of their current position. The General can also “airdrop” minions on the tile, again regardless of his/her position.


Core Mechanics

Bioleech: (X)

Bioleech is a faction a keyword ability. Minions with Bioleech are immediately treated as enemy minions once played and can only be summoned nearby enemy minions and Generals. The (X) indicates the number of turns the Bioleech minion will stay alive after it is summoned, and after that number of turns elapses, the minion will automatically kill itself. The card text of Bioleech minions is written from the opponent’s point of view.

Vortex Hyperwarp

Explained above, Vortex Hyperwarp is a faction tile. Minions can move to a Vortex Hyperwarp tile, and the General can summon minions on a Vortex Hyperwarp tile.

Interspace

Interspace is a faction keyword ability. As an antithesis to Zeal, minions with Interspace will gain additional effects when not nearby the General. Interspace do not act like Opening Gambits but are passive effects that are either active or inactive.


Core Set

Overview

The Core Set is very straightforward, with cards supporting the basic mechanics of this faction. It focuses on two board archetypes: the Parasite archetype that manipulates the opponent with swarms of Parasites and powerful Bioleech minions, and a Hyperwarp archetype that utilizes Airdrop and Interspace minions to take control of the entire board.

Choose a friendly minion. After it moves this turn, summon a random minion with Interspace that costs 2 or less from your deck on a space nearby it.

Space Oddity
2 mana spell
Give a friendly minion +2 Health and create a Vortex Hyperwarp under it.

Lunar Phaser
3 mana artifact
Your general has +1 attack. Whenever your general deals damage, the enemy General summons a 0/1 Parasite on a random nearby space.

Denizens of Shim’Zar

Overview

The Shim’Zar set most notable brings to us the Battle Pets. Battle Pets at their essence has anti-synergy with the Parasite mechanic as they can potentially kill Parasites and Bioleech minions, but it was quite fun trying to design them to be of some use nonetheless.

Bloodbound Ancients

Overview

The Bloodbound set introduces the Blood Surge mechanic, as well as the Tribes. I decided the Golems would be the better fit for the Zhakaxor Cluster, as the idea of artificial biomechanical entities from a distant alien race sounds extremely exciting.

Unearthed Prophecy

Overview

Sentinels are the latest addition to the Zhakaxor Cluster’s hive of astral oddities. This is also the expansion where the Parasite archetype gains access to a truly disruptive tool, where some cards are able to create direct value from Parasites planted within the opponent’s deck.

Id rework lightworm to just transform the next minion they summon, not neccessarily next turn. Otherwise they can just use that turn using spells to remove your board, THEN play a minion next turn

Alright, I made the change. I also fixed it so that it only counts minions summoned from the action bar, so that it’ll no longer be so awkward with cards that make the opponent summon Parasites directly.
