Daily Card Discussion - March 11th - White Widow

The Card of the Day is White Widow, which is in fact a real type of spider

To start off the discussion, here are some questions of consideration:

  1. What is your opinion of this card?

  2. What do you think is (or would be) required for this card to see more play?

  3. What is your favorite animal? Why?

  4. What is your least favorite animal? Why?

The clue for tomorrow’s DCD:

Wanna see a magic trick? Now you see me, now you see me here! And here! And here!

  1. What is your opinion of this card?

I really like White Widow, and replace related cards in general. White Widow is definitely underrated, it has an immediate effect on the board and can potentially lead to a massive effect it if survives a couple turns. The only problem is that its effect is unreliable, and to really work it requires replace synergy (which there isn’t much of). Overall: 7/10

  1. What do you think is (or would be) required for this card to see more play?

More replace synergy. More cards like Aethermaster and Dreamgazer would make White Widow and replace decks much more viable. Also, spells that have an effect + “you can replace and extra card this turn” or “whenever you replace X card type this turn, you can replace another card”. If cards like these get made, I’d say Overall: 9/10 for White Widow.

  1. What is your favorite animal? Why?

Cats and/or Turtles. I have two cats and a turtle, and they’re all adorable :kissing_heart:

  1. What is your least favorite animal? Why?

Probably centipedes. It’s not that I don’t like them (I am very interested in biology and animals), it’s just that they’re a little spoopy.

I like the card, but I think the switch to 2/5 would make a big difference, much like kelaino. With minions like this, attack is hardly relevant, so more health is preferred.

I am currently expirimenting with a Lyonar Deck which I call “Deals Damage” The whole theme of the deck is trying to get free procs off of Lionheart blessing. Be it Azurite Lions, Widowmaker, Bonereaper, anything that deals damage. White Widow was the absolute PERFECT card for this deck until I realized that Lionheart Blessing requires Zeal to draw you cards. Being at 4 Health makes it a prime target for all the AoE effects that also kill your general.

White Widow still pulls it weight though. The deck needs a lot of tuning until it is deemed playable but White Widow is probably in there to stay.

the switch between 3/4 to 2/5 is the difference between rare and legendary

  1. I like the card, its not a impressive looking card but it is good.

  2. Some might say more replace mechanic cards. But in my opinion it can see play as of now and doesn’t need other cards to complement the replace mechanic. Its more of a matter of finding the right deck or using it as a replacement of another card which a player may not have. Like 4WM, White Widow is a good replacement for it until you have 4WM.

  3. Dogs I guess, although I haven’t had much luck with animals in general and have been attacked, chased or been bitten by most pets.

  4. Spiders, just don’t like them and if I see one I have to trap it under a cup or box or something, to give me ease of mind.

  1. This card is obviously useful in replace decks and gauntlet, but lacks enough synergy to be truly viable at this point. I’d like to see a arcanyst which (when replacing arcanysts) gave you a extra replace, leading to a stupid amount of damage, especially with the new vanar card - this could be too overpowered though. I think that answers 2 as well

  2. Cats.

  3. Basically any form of parasite.

theres already an arcanyst called aethermaster that lets you replace two cards per turn

-What is your opinion of this card?

I like it. It’s a card that rewards good deck synergies and decision-making during gameplay. All might not see that because of the randomness of the effect, but replace requires some thought, right?

-What do you think is (or would be) required for this card to see more play?

I don’t think more replace synergy would be necessary. If there ever will be another source of repeatable damage, then these could make a decent pair of machineguns.

  1. I think it’s pretty underrated. The stats aren’t the worst, and you can proc the effect every turn, most importantly on the turn that you play it.

  2. More replace synergy, obviously. There is very little that supports the mechanic but I think it’s close to being a semi-viable deck type or subtype. Also this really benefits decks that are able to keep the opponent at bay, so artillery support would also be good for this card.

  3. Cats, because cats.

  4. Yo momma (ooooooo)

not bad, but requires some synergy. in many decks it wouldn’t see play as they just have better alternatives for the slot.

change the effect to only damage minions, that would make it much more consistent and overal better. sure sometimes you want burst damage but most of the time you play this you want to snipe that one 3/2 ranged minion on the other side of the field or an other minion not the 20+ hp enemy general.

i guess alternatively, making it a 2/5 would also make it more popular. the extra survivability means alot.

  1. Powerful card just doesnt have enough support
  2. A replace focused patch like arcanyst and golems
  3. Owls
  4. People who netdeck

Prismstic Illusionist

  1. It’s a pretty good card that has its place in replace decks. It really shines in gauntlet, since it has a ranged ability attached to a decent body.

  2. I would like to see in-faction replace mechanics. Right now, replace is not so much a cohesive theme as it is a gimmick scattered over many cards

  3. Parus major

  4. Parus minor

(I apologize for this joke; it was horrible)

Aethermaster
Wings of paradise
White widow
Inquisitor kron
Astral crusader?

That’s all the synergy there is for now.
I would like to see a minion with opening gambit to replace an additional card

Actually, it’s one of my favorites. I’ve found it especially helpful in Sajj of all places

A more developed meta, to be honest. This card stacks very well, and support like Aethermaster and Nosh-Rak already exist. Even without Aethermasters, it stacks terribly well for marginal gains alongside Kron and Wings.

Pangolins, Texas Horned Lizards, North American Kestrels

Something about freakishly adorable traits that come from harsh environments- a big fan of predators who have complex, intelligent systems of hunting.

Dolphins.

Probably because they remind me of humanity’s worst traits far more than I’d like.

White widow/aethermaster will prob work real well new circulus.
