Curse Cards Anyone?

What would be people’s opinions on the idea of curses, similar to the ones from Magic: The Gathering? Is there any possible way for them to fit Duelyst? And if so, what are some ideas that people can come up with?

A few ideas I had were the possibilities of lingering curses, removable curses, permanent curses, etc.
Lingering- after x turns the curse is lifted
Removable- if x event is done the curse is lifted
Permanent- self expalantory

One curse idea I had was for Abyssian. “Before one of your minions attacks a general, that general may choose and discard a card from their hand. If they don’t this minions attack does 1 more damage. If they do, the curse is lifted.”

Just an idea I had that could prove interesting but I want to know what people’s idea on it’s validity would be.

That seems really interesting - I especially like the idea you proposed - but I wonder how it could be implemented so that the card text remains simple. I don’t like cards that require loads of context or clarification, and this mechanic seems like it would need a fair bit.

I think it could be a really interesting mechanic if done right, and broken/useless if done badly. Weighing up negatives (i.e. mitigating losses) should be a big part of strategy and I think they’d fit into Duelyst well.

Also want to mention that I’ve never seen this proposed before, so it’s cool to me for that reason as well.

The biggest issue I have with this mechanic is that I don’t feel its complexity suites Duelyst. The cards in Duelyst tend to be straight forward by design. For an example with range and flying CP could’ve given them ranges, like Range(5) this unit can attack anything within five tiles of it. However they chose not to do this to create a more fluid experience. I feel that specific curses might go against that philosophy.

Further more aren’t these just more complex buffs? Isn’t a permanent curse just a buff? Do you really need to call it something new? Sorry I was a bit harsh with my critique, I do think it’s a cool idea but not as something that has a place in Duelyst.

It doesn’t have to be buffs per say. That was just an example. I agree that it adds a good bit of complexity to the game but if done properly it can be relatively simple. This was just a toss up idea. My main point was more of a sort of lingering effect tied to the enemy general. The effect could be anything really. But I do understand what you’re saying.

Very true on the text issue. It would require a bit of work but it could possibly be simplified.
