Alter Rexx is not crap

At least I knew Alter Rexx would be fun against bosses, and that was justification enough to craft it for me.

5 mana, 5/5 Mech
“Whenever you summon MECHAZ0R, put a MECHAZ0R in your action bar.”

This is an OK card in a very narrow sort of deck: The Mechaz0r summoning lists. These lists typically feature the whole rainbow Opening Gambit Mechs, and summon Mechaz0r. This is not good enough to win because Mechaz0r is usually seen from a mile away and dispelled, transformed, destroyed on the spot.

  1. So Mechaz0r lists usually feature secondary and tertiary win conditions. These must be very deck space efficient, because the Mechs take so much space.
  2. Then the deck must also include some amount of answers and trick cards to disrupt the opponent, as our own strategy is rather slow-paced.
  3. Finally we must also include some draw to get the low-cost Mechs for a fast Mechaz0r, or to draw our secondary win conditions!

Alter Rexx comes in to somehow fulfill #1 (reinforced win conditions) and #3 (card draw), while providing a good body on the board… In either Pearl White or Obisdian Black colors.

Alter Rexx used to be 4/4, that 4 health only made it a rather easy thing to remove I suppose. It was branded crap. I think at 5/5 now it arguably is a legit card to play, as for the opponent a 5 health minion played defensively is going to require dedicated removal to get rid of, or a full commitment of their existing board and hand resources.
The “condition” (When you summon a Mechaz0r) will happen 100% of the time. This leaves us with a card which is either removal bait before the Mechaz0r summon, or an actual value jackpot.

Alter Rexx can be compared to Blue Conjurer in more than a way, and that guy is solid. It was the topic of so many complains at the time. Rexx has no RNG and fills your hand with only OP cards. Most of the time if Alter Rexx isn’t answered, then you drop 2 Mechaz0rs per turn afterwards and that quickly becomes too much for most decks (even a Grow+Rizen field).
A lot of people have never seen Alter Rexx, and some with multiple ribbons will even underestimate it and ignore it. Okay for me!

How many Mechaz0rs do you want?

This deck revisits the old “Kara Mech archetype”, and will summon Mechaz0rs. With both Echo Deliverant and Alter Rexx, your opponent WILL have to deal with multiple Mechaz0rs. Often he has only kept one removal in hand, but you will have prepared a string of 2-3 win conditions.

Alter Rexx does win games, and is somewhat better than Echo Deliverant in the sense that it comes a turn earlier, is more sturdy, and easier to combo on the same turn.

Echo Deliverant + Project Omagod is dope, it will yield a couple of planet-sized Mechs (31/31 not unusual, the Omega buff is doubled for Echo copies) in case you get bored of mass producing Mechaz0rs.

Card draw is adequate, provided by Alter Rexx, Frigid Corona. Cryogenesis and a lone Snow Chaser are also another cheap hand-sustaining plan with on-field benefits. Still it’s better to plan a turn ahead and sometimes keep a unit in hand for the best effects, even if you have the mana.

We obviously run Malicious Wisp because our Mech plan is sort of slow by nature, so we need the opponent to be slow as well. There isn’t any combo with Mali here, just play it and smash face with it when possible.

Your only AOE is going to be Sunset Paragon and Aspect of the Mountains… Position your Mechs correctly in order to use Sword of Mechaz0r’s Frenzy.

Ideas for further improvement: Some room for a couple of attack buffs.

Honestly I can see how Alter Rexx could replace Oakenheart (or even S.I.L.V.E.R.) in Titan Mech.
It’d be a solid variant.


Oakenheart progresses Mechaz0r and buffs your other minions generating value trades (good for follow up Titan) and being a removal bait.

Alter Rexx generates value and is a removal bait but in a different way.

I would never take out Silver because Silver works with more cards well together. Cannon + Silver, Metaltooth + Silver, Chassis + Silver, etc.

So rather Oakenheart or you go for the flex spot in sunbreaker, which means we are more greedy and have less answers :slight_smile:

I recently crafted Moloki Huntress and Omniseer, and with these two I thought I’d try a Grow Mech hybrid.

Really liking Omniseer, that I had completely overlooked so far. Some Mech has to have the Grow keyword when S.I.L.V.E.R. is summoned. The deck needs 6 cards to do that consistently, and for the purpose of token Growth Omniseer is actually much better than Verdant Fulmination to go with Godhammer.

Moloki Huntress sort of makes the Grow angle a reasonable strategy in itself, not just a S.I.L.V.E.R.-bound gimmick. Hence Kolossus.

Everything else is standard except the Warpup slot is probably silly. What would you advise?

How about the other 3 drop grow guy, Oropsisaur instead of Kolossus :evergreen_tree:.


Healing Mystic or Primus Fist instead of Warpup. Or Young Silithar.

Haha! Well in this case a two drop is not mandatory.
Maybe some Blazehound for draw, a removal, or something else?

@humancalc I haven’t been impressed by Oropsisaur as of yet, do you think it’ll be faster than the standalone threat that is Kolossus in this context?

Venom Burn

Well two things occured. First I saw a few matches of the world championships where everyone and their sister were playing Letigress.
Secondly it occurred to me that I never played with Venom Toth, and that the ninja wanabe could be pretty fun against all type of common swarm decks (Jax, Fault, Wraithlings, Gor, Eggs, Obelysks).

So here’s a list:
We’re going midrange and burn, toolbox and Aspects.

Card choice explanations

  • Between Bloodtear Alchemist and Snow Chaser, I have four 1drops which is a sweet spot for Aspect or buff combos.
  • Crypto+Mentor package for Warbirds.
  • Hearth Sister to help maximize burn above, and also good movement trick for end game burst of damage.
  • Aspect of the Ravager, good removal given the amount of ping we have here.
  • Blaze Hound personal preference over Spelljammer, but simply a spot for any card draw bully.
  • Venom Toth is as explained, a good joke to play on some decks. Also pings the General, I believe we’re getting good at removing artifacts.
  • Blistering Skorn solid annoyance and good stats, ping you again.
  • Malicious Wisp for overall oppression, and good synergy with our end game bombs (Aspect of the Mountain, EMP).
  • Wailing Overdrive our damage burst and first win condition provider.
  • Letigress seems to be excellent by itself, but also has potentially cool combos with Wailing Overdrive and the Aspects.
  • Aspect of the Wyrm for the surprise value. Cool stuff with Letigress and Rush. Potential EMP or Overdrive bully flying in the face of enemy.
  • Aspect of the Mountain I like: Saberspine Cub is not so cute anymore, and it also works well on any 1drop or Malicious Wisp.
  • EMP the good old reset button.

I don’t see room or need for the more expensive signature Vanar end-game combos, but tell me if you think otherwise.
No walls because of the route taken with EMP.

End thoughts

Very pretentious of me to look at World Championship matches and think I understood something. :slight_smile: I just mean it gave me inspiration to try something new - and it’s fun.
I enjoy this list as it provides a varied assortment of answers and combos, and for once it can provide valid mulligan choices depending on the opponent’s General.

Full credits to @miguelosz who developped and promoted the concept all this time. How could we be so blind?

Well I crafted Rawr and Calculator out of my todo list, and boy was I surprised at how good this can potentially high roll.

Opening move with Gravity Well + Battle Pet is solid and makes sure your opponent will not enjoy his early game. Bur is a bully.
You should assume the aggro role most times in the early game.

You try to assemble a hand for silly big calculator, pretty common when there are Rawr and Yun around. Calculator is often 11~14 in attack rating and demands immediate removal. Then you have Moonlight Basilisk that also demands immediate removal. Then you have Rawr who will apply good pressure if it comes down to that.

Top end is about control with Cloudcaller and Letigress, both providing “removal” and sticky bodies for Wailing Overdrive. I particularly like Letigress and WO, they do work well together.

Miguel’s Vanar pets is about flooding the board and Kara’s BBS makes a lot of sense here. Mine is more mid-range so I went with Faie in case my end game needs a few more pings of damage and to compensate for the zoning of Wailing Overdrive.

I tried a few versions and for example Cryonic Potential can never target a Battle Pet, even if it has attacked. No need to try that.
Aspect of the Mountain is a card I really like and wanted to include, but I had to replace it. Your pets always suicide, or position in such a silly way that make no sense for this AOE. And in the rare cases where all stars align, you don’t have the ability to move Seismic Elemental if it was born from an exhausted pet. So there’s your chance for Cloudcaller to shine. Could also be Frostburn I suppose.

The deck does work surprisingly well, and I must praise @miguelosz again for developing the concept. You will definitely catch some people by surprise.

Valid suggestion on Hearth Sister, it’d be a solid addition. I will let other testers figure out what’s best to replace from their own experience. :slight_smile:
