Card Discussion Magesworn

Type: Unit (Arcanyst)
http://www.bagoum.com/cards/Magesworn

Rarity: Legendary

Set: Unearthed Prophecy

Cost: 6

Stats: 3/8

Effect:
BOTH players cannot cast spells that cost 2 or less.

Here are some of the players initial thoughts

“Is this the first real floodgate card introduce in Duelyst ?
Not sure if anyone here play Yugioh but Konami went overboard with floodgate cards (cards that prevent your opponent from playing any type of cards, be it spell, monster or trap cards).
I hope this will be a one-time thing and not a trend. Yes It a good counter to faie but that is just lazy balancing. What next ? Card that prevent you from playing minion that cost 3 mana or less ? Rip aggro/zoo ! Game is balanced !
I would rather have the effect be so all spell cost 5 mana more or something. At least that would still let my opponent play cards but at a disadvantage. CPG going in the wrong direction making cards that prevent you from playing the game at all.
Just my 2 cents.”

“Oh goodness, the anti Mana Deathgrip/Chromatic Cold/Aspect of the Fox tech this sub’s been craving, albeit later in the game. Question is, are BBS blocked as well?”

“Shuts down every BBS, Corona, Fox, PF, CCold, Punish, Fortitude, Tempest, Lure, Judgement, Jux, MDS, and probably more that I’m not immediately remembering.”

  1. Did the card match your initial impressions of it? Is it better or worse than you original thought?

  2. How often do you see this card on the ladder? What deck do you think it is good in?

3.Are you comfortable with this style of card and balancing? When card like this is good the person can do nothing.Should they alway make cards just where you would just be at a disadvantage or is once a while shutting down the ability to do something fine?

Great tech for Titan Lyonar decks and other control archetypes built to play around the drawback.

I really wanna try making a janky Variax deck with it…

It’s funny to me that it doesn’t get complained about even though it shuts down Vanar, as well as Eight Gates Songhai, but I think that’s EXACTLY why people don’t complain about it.

I have never seen one played in my matches. I think it can be a decent tech card, but I would never craft a legendary just to have that kind of effect. If it had been available during the Arcanyst meta, it would have become a staple, but as of now I don’t think it’s crucial to have this card.

The other day i decide to try it out because I want to do Sphynx/ Magesworn memes. Then I found out oh yeah this card is pretty good against Vanar. That’s the reason we were excited about it being added to the game. In actual gameplay it has been pretty brutal at times because on 4 mana(turn 2) I have been flashing it out as Magmar. Which forces either premium expensive removal to be used which often a bad tempo play or honest game of minion combat and Magmar is faction with Lavaslasher and Mankantor.

The most fun part is the card feels almost like brand new card added to game that nobody knows about and Vanar players seem most confused about it. You can see how they move their mouse and how long it takes to make decision “They are going what do I” and then the added disappointment at the end of the turn when figure out they can’t use their hero power either is awesome feeling.Maybe if someone comes up with good list it could become meta but feels like slight clunky tech choice that can be very effective at time.

I think Magesworn has been underrated. It really hurts Songhai, Abyssian, and Vanar. No Punish, no Aspects, no Chromatic Cold.

I think that it probably works best in Lyonar, but I have played it a bit in Songhai.

To be extra mean, I have been playing it with Sphynx, so the opponent gets locked out of replacing. If they eventually get only low cost spells in their hand, they are locked out of playing. :innocent:

@isgopet deckLandscapeSonghai (4)

 hm.

If you are going battle pet Songhai, missing out on Ion + Killing Edge/Saberspine Seal + Crimson Coil is an issue.

I think Gauj is a fun card to play, but I prefer to run him in decks with other hard to kill minions - those with forcefield, etc., so the enemy runs out of removal.

I’m pretty sure this card could see some play in the competitive scene as a sideboard staple against Vanar and Spell Songhai. However, I have not watched any major competitive events after Ancient Bonds so I wouldn’t know. As a note, has there even been any major Duelyst events after Unearthed Prophecy?

The one time I saw this card on ladder was in a very tech-heavy Lyonar deck. The player was clearly trying to fish for some Vanar, but the deck fell apart quite quickly to my more proactive strategy.

Also, I have to mention the sprite. It looks like Umbreon from Pokemon ate too many steroid-infused wheaties.

Liking for that last paragraph lol.

I havent tried the card but it looks fun to play.

Wonder how it could fit into keeper vaath

The deck is a meme from when he said he’d take ANY deck to S-rank based upon player voting but casually removed this one even though it was the winner by far.

me and @epicflygon do

Magesworn… Such a great ability, but for its cost and body it is not quite as useful as it could be. If it were cheaper, even with a smaller stat line, I would use it a lot more. 2 drop spells are useful at all points in the game, but being able to stop them sooner would help create more pressure for your opponent. As it is now, magesworn acts as means of telling your opponent they’re boned if you already have the upper hand (unless they’re play Magmar, lololol).

I don’t think it’s a bad card, I just wish it had a little more appeal.

Yeah, I am disappointed that a lot of the utility minions cost so much. Artifact Hunter, Twilight Sorceror, Spelljammer (yes, the latter 2 have both had their costs increased), Magesworn, etc., etc.

I think they got that little Abyssian that makes swarm/creep about right - it is little and cheap and has an interesting ability.

I played Yugioh as well, although only for fun. Still got a lot of cards but I lost my deck somewhere which was a machine synergy type deck using cards I collected over time. But I’m way out of touch with the game, having played Yugioh legacy of the duelyst and playing against the AI who have very tuned decks with a bunch of summons happening by turn 1.

As for Magesworn I’m fine with the card. Its a tech card that can shut down certain decks, but we also have Nightwatcher which can shut down rush minions and Obleysk Vet. Having these type of cards can be dangerous, if the effect is too powerful against a lot of factions. I don’t know if Magesworn falls into that yet. Haven’t had enough experience with the card.

Right now interns of the current meta “a bunch” of summons in the first turn is an under exaggeration.

Just watch a zoodiac combo vid and you can see all the summons!
