Can we have a questions for the devs corner?

I just thought that it’d be cool to have a thread where we can ask the devs questions about inspirations (for the art), goals for the game, etc.

Whether it’d be about design choices for the cards and whatnot could be up to the devs that answer (tbh though, @Ryvirath would probably be the only one who answers from the dev team )

What do you guys think?

Why would we not want something so awesome?

I won’t make a seperate category for it. But I am always around. If you guys have questions you are always welcome to ask, be it pm or in a thread etc. Some stuff I may not be able to answer, and some stuff the answer may not be what you are looking for, but I am always around

I think they want the developer team themselves to interact more with us personally. It does feel like there’s a giant wall between us as it is, so I don’t blame them.

A “devs corner” would be a breeding ground or potent ground for a LOT of unwanted, unfounded, and poor commentary and questions. I myself could easily see me wanting to ask a lot of snippy questions for the things I’ve been bitter against.

Having to filter through so many to find valid questions, it’d be more disheartening in such a format, as well as hugely inaccurate to the actual feeling players may have with the game overall.

So where did you guys get the inspiration for the art?

If you mean the original inspiration then it’s always been a really interesting art style that the team pursued due to a couple reasons. The main reason being the entire team just really likes pixel art and it is such a distinct style that we felt really helps give Duelyst a big part of its identity.
If you mean where we get inspiration for specific cards, then our art team draws its inspiration from a ton of mediums, we’ve had a ton of small references in before towards animes, throwbacks, etc. On top of that, the main duelyst art design motto is simple designs are fine but with a twist. So a regular elf, for example, is probably never going to show up.

How are the sound effects created? Recorded voices? Who?

The Chakri Avatar guy deserves an award

They were recorded early on. We have a ton of them and most are still not even used currently.

Where did you get the inspiration for the faction identities? Female only semi-cultists, iron-coated sand people, even immortal lizard people…How even?

They used random word generators xD

I have a couple of question:

  • Who is the guy with an awesome epic voice in Lore sections? Is he famous or something?

  • What are dev’s favorite anime so far?

  • Any plans to make Duelyst - related physical merchandise that we can buy? (artbooks, plushies, etc)

The faction identities were a collaboration between alot of people early on with a focus on using familiar themes but making sure for each to feel unique.

Im not sure who did the voice in the lore. I like to imagine he is Morgan Freemans long lost cousin.

Counterplay’s favorite anime is Cory In The House

We recently partnered with Into The AM for a clothing line that you can find here https://www.intotheam.com/collections/duelyst-official-merchandise
Beyond that we definitely are looking at other physical products, something to keep a look out for

I think you mean seinfeld

@Ryvirath in earlier art, the abyssian general Lilithe had much more visable cleavage, but in game it’s covered up. Whats the design philosophy behind this massive boobage nerf?

Before Boobage nerf

After Boobage nerf

I am curious to know what developers think when they hear the phrase “faction identity”. The term comes up in almost all discussion however people seem to be using it for different things.

Hey, if it’s a “ask dev” thread, I have dev questions !

What is the technical platfom for Duelyst ? (HTML/CSS+Javascript+ … WebGL?)
What is the IDE ?
What tool to produce graphics ?

For the Lilithe thing it wasn’t for any particular reason. It simply looked aesthetically better in our eyes which is why we went for it.

As far as faction identity goes, personally I feel like faction identity is the way a faction should feel more so than the tools available to it. So for Vanar for example, to me it’s identity has always been about a heavy control style with the ability to have strong synergies and very disruptive spells.

As far as the production questions for how it’s made I am not sure on those so I’d have to ask around. Ill try to get back to you on this.
