Have you read the lore and the card lore specifically? Thereās āencumberedā words everywhere, itās the way of the world Duelyst takes place in.
One could consider such words and word and grammer usage to enforce the notion that itās all happening on an alien planet. Kind of like Tolkien and his language things (although he went much further).
Bounded Lifeforce - Why I can't play this card. [Suggestion]
For the longest time I always thought it was Unbound Lifeforce, which I think is a cooler name. LIke normally all Lifeforce is bound(kept in check and the same) but powerful Magmar soldiers can āUnbindā themselves and become absurdly strong.
Best explanation I found was on Grammarist:
āBound vs. bounded
The verb bind makes bound in the past tense and as a past participle. So, for example, if you tied together two things this morning, you bound them together, and the two things were then bound together. Bounded is the past tense and past participle of the verb bound, which has two main definitions: (1) to confine or serve as the boundary of, and (2) to leap or spring. For example, an island is bounded on all sides by water, and somewhere a rabbit bounded out of a bush this morning.ā
I learned something today.
It already does make sense. Your lifeforce has been bounded ā that is, had its boundaries set ā at 10/10.
āBound Lifeforceā would be grammatical but make less sense for what the card does.
As a native English speaker I can tell you that the past participle of BIND is BOUND. Not BOUNDED.
Also, as a native English speaker I can tell you that āboundedā is at worst nonsensical in this context and at best confusing.
I understand that in mathematics BOUNDED refers to limits being placed upon something, and yes if you take that stance then it makes sense because it limits you to 10/10, but it just SOUNDS SO BAD! Lol!
If you arenāt native or lack an ear for the language, it might escape you but it just sounds so wrong.
Unbound Lifeforce would be a cooler name by far
You havenāt read @d0kās reply? He explains it so that it should be clear to you what it means and that it is in fact grammatically correct.
The verb is to bound, not to bind.
The verb being used here is āboundā, not ābindā, as @Aeruniel said. It refers to the reduction in your max health that is the ācostā of getting the +8 attack.
As a native English speaker for probably much longer than you, as well as a professional writer, it makes perfect sense to me. Never once did it ever occur to me that it meant anything other than what it sounds like: the past tense of āboundā. Likewise, I have never heard anyone else ever complain about this before, and most players of this game are native English speakers.
Itās pretty normal, I think, for certain words to just āseem wrongā to our brains even when they are fine. It happens to me on occasion. I think this one is on you buddy.
With only the small disadvantage of actually meaning the exact opposite of their intentions.
PS. Google ābounded down the stairsā for another use of āboundā.
Math police is my favourite police
As a professional writing tutor, I must admit that this topic has left me deeply unsettledā¦haha. While @d0k makes a great point, I struggle with the net connotation: ālimited, boundary-ed lifeforceā. For a spell that appears to signify an unleashing (2 ā 10) as opposed to a limiting, Iād find āBoundlessā much more fitting. Perhaps a rename altogether: āChanneledā, āApexā, āUnburdenedā.
I was curious, so I checked, and there is lore for this card. Read it, and I think the name will make more sense.
Grammar police reporting for duty!
That should be āMATH POLICE REPORTING FOR DUTY!ā
(Sorry, couldnāt resist.
)
We can all throw our professional qualifications around but it doesnāt make you any more right than it makes me.
If bounded is the past tense of bound, then how does that make sense in relation to the card?
A professional writer but not a very good reader it seems, see my original post for the exact example that you have made in your closing sentence.
It seems everyone is getting confused with the word BIND and BOUND.
I understand that āboundedā can be used correctly in relation to a restricted set of values but I am inclined to agree with @eudaimonia in thinking that the connotation is misleading.
Or we can just all stop caring about something as irrelevant as a card name. If you donāt like the name and therefore donāt want to use the card, go ahead. Since you are the only person even remotely caring, this is not going to be changed, especially since the cards name doesnāt have a definite mistake in it or sth.
So one voice doesnāt matter, is what youāre saying?
And somehow you have more of a right to post a comment that literally has no value than I do to voice a genuine opinion.
It always amazes me how people feel the need to chip in with pointless comments. If you thought it was irrelevant, then you neednāt have commented. It is that simple.
In this case bounded is not a verb, itās an adjective. Bounded is describing lifeforce, the lifeforce is bounded; meaning that it has boundaries and is limited in someway. Personally i never took a second glance at the card name, but it does make sense.
Yeah exactly that, one voice doesnāt matter. Neither yours nor mine.
You can go on with this discussion, i donāt mind, i am just saying its a fruitless one
First, you āopened the doorā to the matter of qualifications when you suggested that you had better qualifications due to being a ānative English speakerā. If that makes your opinion superior to that of a non-native speaker, then my published book and being paid for years to edit othersā work makes my opinion arguably superior to yours.
Read the lore for the card.
What happens if you cast Bounded Lifeforce, remain at 10 health, and the next turn cast Earth Sphere? Nothing, thatās what. In exchange for +8 attack, your ālifeforceā (health total) has been restricted (bounded) to the lower value of 10.
Itās really very simple.
Ah yes, this sort of thing is always highly persuasive.
I donāt really know what you guys are talking about but Iāve tried my best to be usefull:

Sorry for link I would upload the image if I could.
Dude. There are a lot of people that have given you their opinion on the matter. You donāt even try to see them. Could you at least give them credit for going out of their way to look for something useless, even, to discuss what you brought up ? And yet, you are being close minded and do not even consider them. Damn.
