I wonder if Magmar can do it. Does the effect go away when dispelled? If so, Primal Balast could be amazing. Otherwise, egg morph and and kill your own guy could work… too bad Thumping wave doesn’t.
Boss Battle: Archmagus Vol – Duelyst
Gonna give a try, I was having fun with Vet
Love building these silly decks, stimulate creativity, thinking out of the box, thanks for this boss fight
So there’s a few goals we shoot for when designing bosses. Ideally we want the boss to offer an experience that you can’t get in ladder or gauntlet. We also want the bosses to be a challenge. Because the AI will never be advanced enough to beat most players in a fair setting, we use unique mechanics or “gimmicks” as you call it to help achieve both of these goals.
In regards to this boss, we built it with the expectation that most players would want to modify their decks to win. Without going into too much detail, there’s a lot of really clever tricks you can do to play around the boss mechanic to work in your favor, and most of them would involve some creative deck building. We don’t always hit the mark with these bosses, so feedback like this is always important. When you say you’d prefer “serious deck construction” could you elaborate?
Primal ballast and all the grow/Moloki archetype doesn’t work, the 6+ damage is not dispelled, still efficient and will instakill you
Need to find something else … maybe Eternal Heart to survive and the usual Juggernaut stuff.
edit : Fractal Replication is fun, still experimenting
edit 2 : confirmed Eternal Heart saves the day
Beat him with Songhai, took a while though. Had to use a lot of spells including movement to keep Zane from killing himself. I didn’t use Deathstrike Seal much, but it was amazing when my Mind-cage Oni’s gave me 2 Spiral techniques and a Holy Immolation.
We have very different ideas on bosses. My idea for boss fights involved changing BBS and making a relatively faction specific deck made for the BBS which isn’t like ladder or gauntlet, but seems much more Duelyst-y. Always on the boss forums it’s “tough boss but if you use” because the particular gimmick this week is to work around the general battle pet style of bosses and any super cheesy counters.
I think the main difference in your design philosophy and my personal Duelyst experience is I’m not here to make a new deck. When a boss comes avilable, I want to use a deck I already have and like.
But I have already done my serious gripping here, and here and kinda here
Oh my dear nwardezir - you are sciencing the wrong things!
There actually lies a simpler solution to, ahem, manipulate Zane if you’re Magmar
I could expose said secrets but where’s the fun in that?
Cast him down into the dust just for 4 mana
Probably, but Magmar and Lyonar are my 2 “hated” faction, so I’m not very creative with these
Anyway, the Heart combo worked and it was fun to send these waves of big ass minions to his head after that
Maybe Eggmorph may do the trick to remove Zane of the equation , gonna give a try, you’re teasing me
Edit : ok, eggmorph is cheaper and easier
Dunno if anyone caught this but uh… If you attempt to give Zane KE, it causes a bug and kills the match.
You also can just take your usual deck and change 3 cards, that’s not a full makeover.
(just took my Ladder Abyssian and switched 3 cards with 3 Horror Buster and works like a charm, I guess it’s same with eggmorph, sandswirl reader, aspect shimzar etc)
Is there anything like that for Songhai?
EDIT: Thanks @nwardezir, wanna try some specific decks with this guy, but I don’t have a small enough tech for it.
That’s what I was thinking about, maybe Dagona, or pandamonium + PF
Dunno, may require a specific deck (about to try full General BS combo with flicker, masks etc) will keep you posted
Read Zane’s card text. If his attack goes over 6 you lose
Did face smash Vaath with an Eternal Heart and Egg Morphs to deal with the failure known as Zane. Didn’t get to use the Heart, but glad to see someone else had the idea too. Egg Morph was also already mentioned, but I figured I’d confirm that it does work.
Did it fast and dirty (even added 3xJoseki for the fun), once you have put Zane with a MDS in his back with 2x Obscuring Blows, it’s fine
Actually, that’s where I was planning to put my General to BS him myself, and use BBS and MDS to move Zane away, but I changed in middle of game.
Armagus Vol being static is also a good advantage, for BS, or simply, if Abyssian, to put a creep under his feet and watch him slowly decay
Yeah, deck building just for a boss is a hastle. I have 4 decks and don’t often make new ones unless the old one is done for.
I will make a million decks with every general and play then against each other to see which style I like and then settle on a deck to use for when I actually want to play Duelyst: so login and play. So yeah, no thanks
I understand, don’t worry, boss aren’t mandatory, feel free to skip them
I just like the “building” challenge, and the reward orb worth the effort, at least to me.
And it’s so refreshing to play something different, away from the meta and netdecks
KUDOS to the Devs, keep sending the Bosses !
(and please, bring back Rift Mode)
Eh, I just went with massive healing Lyonar. I had thought about bouncing Zane back to hand or transform but was too lazy to experiment. Glad to know it works… will make doing the fight on my kid’s account easier
haha!!! It took me a while to realize Zane can be transformed!!
yaa it must be so easy for Vanar folks.
Nevertheless I enjoyed this one!!
Probably it would be more fun without transformation…but it was kinda hard so I gave in. lol

(I was learning throughout the fight…so you will see a few dumb mistakes here and there. lol)
