Bloodborn Bonds at their Core - A Starter Deck Contest

“It’s not the size of a hammer that count - it’s how you wield it…”
Muradin Bronzebeard

Greetings all!

We’ve all been there. You start playing a new game. You try to get a grasp of what’s going on. You finally find combos, see how they might work, fret at them not working, fall and rise again…

And all that with just that half full bag of minor healing potions, only leather armour as your protection and a bent halberd in your hands. In this case? A worn Ethereal Obelysk as your watchtower; a Wind Striker as your messenger; Phalanxar, drunk, at guard duty; Sunstone Bracers as your working gloves when you dig pits for defence; Blood Siren as your councel…

As your first steps you take the highest value bundle the passing merchant had to offer: a blessing of a Bloodborn, or a mystical writ of Ancient Bonds. What do you make out of that pile?

Rules of Contest

Post a deck list abiding to the following restrictions:

  • ONLY cards of a faction starter (cards obtained on level 11; labeled basic)
  • ONLY cards of the neutral starter (labeled basic)
  • ADD cards from one of the following expansions
    -Rise of the Bloodborn
    -Ancient Bonds
  • If you want, ADD a set of a single crafter rare in the comments below your deck
-Use formatting: -3x [card name omited] +3x [rare card added]
-If you do not use the whole set, adjust the numbers accordingly

For deck building, use the deckbuilder found below:
http://www.bagoum.com/deckbuilder

Export the deck as horizontal and upload or link it to your post.

For upvoting, like a post containing a deck list. Feel free to comment on good ideas and add suggestions!

Your target audience:

  • A new player getting into the game, following online feedback to get into the frey with a budget deck of 20 USD (the price of a single expansion).
  • Following their initial investment, your target audience wants to keep adding to their collection Free To Play, with a specific faction and deck type as their main.
  • Your first rare set suggestion will be their initial goal in crafting. You can add additional goals in crafting if you like.
  • These decks are designed as the very first decks to carry a newcomer through their first weeks.

Example Deck

RARE ADDITION:
-3x Skyrock Golem
+3x Golem Metallurgist

NOTES:
With this deck you’ll get your Core golems into good use. You’ll battle your opponents’ higher level minions with stealing them with Thunderclap, lengthening its durability with Boulder Breacher and Blindscorch (since you don’t have Falcius). Your endgame minion is Dragonbone Golem, it’s summon made cheaper with Celebrant (just don’t use their manatiles immediately unless really needed), and after you disenchant your first Legendary, Metallurgist. Blood of Air is essential with dealing high power minions.

NEXT STEPS:
Falcius is a great and cheap staple in any Vetruvian deck!

Have fun everyone, and make the best of what you’ve got to build with!

FAQ:

Q: Why limit the crafting to a set of rares, not commons?
A: To keep it simple. Some restrictions have to apply to differentiate the thread from other ‘budget deck’ topics. You can suggest a common crafting guide in your Next Steps section of your post.

Q: But I don’t want to spend money, and I don’t like the expansion model!
A: You don’t have to - it’s completely up to you if you play the decks or not! The limitations are for those curious, and for the sake of contest.

Q: Are there anything in it for me, if it’s a contest?
A: You get to help! If you get more likes for your post than the others, consider yourself entitled to a virtual cookie and a knighthood (and any estates belonging to the title) granted by House Starstrider.

Q: Beginners should git gud and start off playing Gauntlet instead!
A: That’s certainly one way to do it! We’re here to investigate other alternatives and their potentials though! Consider your time well spent in innovation rather than efficiency.

Q: Can I post more than one deck?
A: Sure! Keep them coming! More the merrier! If you didn’t catch the drift yet, it’s not really a contest…

Q: Hey, this seems fun, and the decks pretty effective!
A: Well, that wasn’t exactly a question, but you’re right!

This contest is sponsored by House Starstrider from their generous wealth. May the sands grant you safe passage.

Yours,

Krause

Since Sajj and Ancient Bonds is already taken I’ll do something with Zirix and RoB.

Barebones Midrange Vet

Addition:

  • 3x Bloodshard Golem
+3x Falcius (I know it’s not a rare but this card makes the deck tick more than any rare card in the faction.)

Notes:
This deck is the very bare skeleton of the traditional Midrange vet playstyle. Your goal is to play efficiently and win the board. Buffs and well statted minions will allows you to do that, it’s up you as a player to use those pieces to outmaneuver your opponent and win using Grandmaster Nosh- Rak as a finisher.

Grand!

You can of course use combinations others have used as well. You could obviously do all kinds of different starters from same combinations.

Variety is great of course! I’m really looking forward to what people manage to come up with with Magmar and Songhai.

I thought this was going to be a tournament

feelsbadman

Shouldn’t they make one!

I don’t have any prizes for a tourney! But it might be cool

I dunno

How do I get prizes for a tourney?

Basic Bloodborn Swarm:

Rare Addition:
-3x Horn of the Forsaken
+3x Shadow Dancer (more control / healing / artifact ping). Or Bloodmoon Priestess (more swarm, unkillable meat shield). Or Darkfire Sacrifice (more ramp, faster Variax).

Oh, and, I’d like to see a zero spirit tournament. Possibly even, zero spirit, zero expansions, with the prize being the (overall winner | best deck of each faction) gets to replace the in game starter deck for that faction.

Well, you can always make your own tournament, if you want to know more then I think if you message Juvey he should be able to help.

Great idea! Maybe we can make another thread for that.

In the meantime, keep the decks coming.

Remember to check that your deck list image is visible in your post for users’ convenience!

Should call it the 0 spirit tournament.

##GOLEMSEEKER

RARE ADDITION
-1x Ephemeral Shroud
-1x Greater Fortitude
-1x Saberspine Tiger
+3x Flash Reincarnation

NOTES
If you want to go Vaath, you should probably look into Bloodborn and Drogon - but for the golems in Ancient Bonds Starhorn works fine. Your smaller minions will survive the great Croc’o’caust which is Plasma Storm through a turn or two of Godhammer. Slam minions down one at a time, and stay alive with the healing you have. Remember to keep a golem in the backlines alive for Ragebinder’s Bond effect to trigger! Once you have Juggernaut ready, it’s more or less settled. Just keep calm and hold the board before that happens. Flash Reincarnation will win you games as soon as you craft them.

Clasic Bully Lyonar

Rare Addition
-1x Brightmoss Golem
-2x War Surge
+3 Ironcliffe Guardian

Notes
This deck is a pretty simple one to play with — you simply play strong minions mid-game and bolster it with your BBS, and Divine Bond/War Surge for potential burst/value. Repulsor is used as a cheap ‘removal’, and True strike is a great basic control card for early game, though may be replaced by Draining Wave. Tiger serves as either finisher as well or removal against certain threats, best against 1/3 minions such as Manaforger, Circulus, and Katara.

Next Steps
Azurite Lion is a great 2drop and BBS target, True Strike may be changed by Arclyte Sentinel as they almost function the same minus the range. Play carefully and think when to start getting aggressive against general or obtain the board…
