People trashing the card and yeah, it’s bad for having an assymtrical effect.
On the other hand …it’s a one mana songhai spell thay cycles itself…thats synergy on it’s own

why not just get a card that does something instead? there are very few card slots to spare already, you could get an extra juxta or mist dragon seal instead or a phenix fire maybe to get both the synergy and a useful effect?

Are you kidding me?!
Well… in a rare occasion you may end up with a unplayable card in your hand…
Mmmh after thinking a bit about the card
The thing is :
more or less all the songhai spells can be used in almost every deck while the creatures played in a backstab kaleos deck are difficult to use for other factions (except ki beholder and similar).
I’d say for the enemy is a 50/50 between replace fodder and ultra cool card.
While songhai can abuse almost everything they draw.
So here songhai player lose card advantage for a good random card, since above gold decks are crafted to increase consistency and “bad” or conditional cards aren’t common.
It can be playable imo.
Where?, i don’t really know.
Songhai can abuse almost everything they draw? About 50% of songhai spells are utter garbage depending on the variant you’re playing at any given point. This card is nothing but card disadvantage that you actually are spending mana for.
Well, i don’t know you but when i play songhai i put inner focus, phoenix fire, juxtaposition, 2x spiral, mistdragonseal, sometimes 1 heaven eclipse
I don’t see the garbage here, the worst are 8 dmg on 8 mana and draw 3 spell on 5 mana
Fixed that
The only thing they can’t abuse are dervish and vespyrs specialistic cards, dervish “can’t go alone” played cards are dunecaster and third wish and whispers of sand (which draws you a card btw).
Vespyrs “can’t go alone” cards aren’t even seen in diamond and above.
Then from lowly drops to fatties there aren’t real “omg i can’t use this” cards
All this needs is to reduce the cost of the drawn card by 1 and then it could be considered viable.
Until then, this will be just a meme card. Sigh.
This is how you lose dedicated players.
Releasing cards like this as part of expan. Alongside the egg golem of magmar or the everykeyword possible golem of lyonar. the two already brainless factions.
been here since alpha, losing my motivation to play.
Maybe the reason of lost motivation may also be because you’re here since alpha
Or maybe overreacting
my logic says that expan. Should work for balance and a new ways to add depth to the game.
in the last expan. Songhai got dumpstered hard, i made no changed to my deck whatsoever…
Now songhai got a 7 mana draw engine 3/7, when you’re already going for the kill.
What’s the point of creating an even wider gap between factions. How many kaleos have you seen on s rank or vespyr decks? almost none this is where balance should be created.
80% of the decks you’re facing are lyonar or magmar, control faie sometimes too(which is my favorite).
That’s it.
@mathspy
It’s not 0 mana and the difference is critical.
0 mana cantrip means being abused and can be played regardless if you have mana or not for that turn. Mixed in with Alcuin would cause headaches.
By keeping the card 1 mana but reducing the drawn card’s mana by 1 in essence makes the card cost 0, but still requires the initial mana.
0 mana card’s can be played forever. You can’t play a 1 mana card that draws a X-1 mana card forever.
Honestly, something like this would be both thematic and a fair buff for Starhorn.
“Make songhai shit again”
So the only songhai card of this expansion that Will be playable is the artifact. Just like in rotb the only decent cards were obscuring blow and ethereal blades. 3 cards playable in two entire expansions. Cmon…
That’s definitely an overstatement. Calligrapher and Kindling have potential for sure.
Calligrapher is garbage because you are paying 7 mana to draw 3 random spells at the end of your turn. Imagine if you draw Shadow waltz, joseki and mana vortex…
Kindling is decent but you need to have at least 1 or 2 arcanyst on the board already. It works likes owl Beast wich again is something but its not good.
How exactly? It’s 7 mana so no killing edge…
Beside say you deployed it.
Rushing unit —> got killing edge —+> no mana to cast.
turn 8 it’s probably going to eats a heavy fat dispel.
Say you got inner focus, at turn 7 is you still need your inner focus that bad you might just concede.
The only cards you might want to get are juxta, mds or the 8 mana fat finisher.
Kindling will be good assuming it’s not getting dispeled right away, and it will… you better believe it.
I think the underlying problem is that tempo argeon is just too oppressive that it makes the design space for all other factions quite tight including songhai. Calligrapher on its own is awesome in my opinion but it becomes garbage when you start thinking “will this help me survive against lyonar?”. the balance in this game is the issue.
I agree that lyonar is too oppressive right now. But the problem of calligrapher is not lyonar, is the fact that It draws random cards
expansions are not about printing cards to improve current decks, its about printing cards to make new deck archtypes work. Why not instead of thinking about how you can put these new cards into your current deck, you think about what kind of decks these cards can enable.
Also i think your wrong about what you see in S rank, it’s pretty diverse, there all the vet mains plus reva shows up a lot. Even Kaleos sometimes. I know for a fact that rank 1 is a swarm abyss deck rn.
