A little bit confused about the rotation (and why a lot of core had to go)

I decided to pick up vanar again since it’s the only one that seems to work for me this expansion when I noticed that mark of solitude was gone. Now I’m just pretty confused since I never saw other people run it.

And now that i’m actually looking into the list of cards that are getting rotated out, it seems like such a mixed bag: Some cards are strong, some are weak, some are just meh. I get some cards are getting the “faction-lock reprint” treatment, but a lot of them seems ??? It would be really nice to know why a lot of these cards had to go.

I mean look at hank hart! he was the most fun card to play when i was getting started! Cosmic Flesh+ Hank was the coolest combo ever!(not to mention him being rebuke resistant is the coolest thing ever).

i guess hank hart didnt really fit with the art style of other minions? for other cards like the strong 4 drops it was probably a balance thing. If you played 4-drops in your deck most likely it was sunsteel, dioltas or skorn

I miss day watcher and lux ignis. I just started using them in fun swarm heal deck which was rather good in diamond prev season.

I liked Day Watcher too. He was great with Stars Fury and would be even better with Accomunulotopalomanonimbus

Speaking of fun cards that rotated out…
MOGWAI
The nostalgia. When I had no cards cuz I was new mogwai was my draw engine for life man

hmmm the 4 drops kiiiind of make sense. I’m not sold on the art style argument though. i mean, the new generals’ new pixel art aside, there’s actually a huge inconsistency with the quality of animations in the pixel art. Take this one for example:

  • lilithe does this harmless bonk

  • cassy transforms a doohickey into a demon torso holding a sword, and then does this megaslash

  • maehvs does this doubleswing wraparound, pulls the whip so as to restrain, and pulls so hard an explosion happens, and then she brandishes the whip back into the default position.

don’t even get me started with golems. but really, I’m 100% sure it’s not the art. he’s actually even perfect to go along with the space theme that most mythron minions bring!

So Vanar, Lyonar and Vetruvian got cards added to the core set (their grandmasters respective Excelsious), so each faction had to lose one card because the numbers should stay the same.

Hmmm this adds a step closer to the true answer, but it’s still not quite there yet is all. I mean the cards removed were so arbitrarily chosen. They’re not even similar rarities.they’re not all minions or all spells, not even the same mana costs either.

Well I don’t know how they decided to remove these cards. They all didn’t really see much play though.

Sand trap definitely. Templar though. Hes a pretty solid, low cost dispel minion. And he would have even seen more play with strategos around.

Mark wasn’t meta sure, but ill be damned if i say it sees no play. Its the most solid way to keep a cirulus alive and untechable in a kara vanarcanyst deck.

If I recall correctly… (these aren’t my words, just a summary of what I remember)

  • All Grandmasters were just flat out added. Lyonar already had theirs, so Excelsious was put in instead (so that every faction has the same number of Legendaries)
  • Lyonar - Epic Swap; Sunforge Lancer is pretty iconic to Healyonar, no one really played with Sunstone , we swapped those two to keep the quantity of cards the same, while improving the Lyonar core pool
  • Vetruvian - Common Swap; There is no “ranged removal” in Vetruvian’s core pool. In order to prevent having to (re)print removal every set/year for rotations, it just made sense to put the newest iconic removal (Blood of Air) into core. To do that, we removed another unplayed card (Sand Trap).
  • Vanar - Rare Swap; Sometime last year it was decided that instead of accentuating weaknesses (ex: making Vetruvian General’s close-quarter monsters and thus making that Siphon Energy changes), we should just timidly shy away from anything we don’t want the faction to have.
Ranged Removal and AoE are cornerstones to Duelyst, and every faction needs them. To avoid reverting Vanar back to beta days (where a single Jax Truesight could ruin them) we opted to include Frostburn into core, and swapped out the incredibly niche (and apparently confusing) Mark of Solitude.

The whole Neutral grab-bag: lots of reasons for lots of things. Some had to do with a clash of aesthetic (Hank Hart is loveable, but messes with the vibe of Duelyst, how do you explain a spaceman in a world with Fire Spitter?). Others were the monthlies that weren’t made with the TLC, etc. I don’t have the whole list of reasons, just know there were many for why some made the cut, and why others didn’t.

Long story short @cloudfrog, they rotated out some cards so that we wouldn’t get them from core orbs

Rip my sweet cirulus protector, no one understood u like i did :frowning: i wanted to do vale hunter memes but its all too late. The explanation was satisfactory though! Mark always popped up in the reddit noob thread and thats how i got acquainted with the card in the first place.

For real tho thanks noa! This is really enlightening

The only one I’m truly sad about is Astral Crusader. I let him go once but…

He’s yet to come back, but I’ve seen his picture.
It doesn’t look the same up on the racks.
We go way back.
I wonder 'bout his insides…
It’s like his thoughts are too big for his size.
He’s been taken… where, I don’t know?
Off he goes with his perfectly unkept hope…
There he goes…

First legendary :frowning: he’s understatted, but definitely solid ;-;

have u considered just not printing vet ranged removal  haha

seriously I think it is good that factions have some weaknesses, I see you guys think a little differently though :magsad:

The secret is that ragnorw players have very small patience. Just bloodtear 1 egg, and wait for them to concedebones. For vaath just lightbender him when he plays finality and u can telepathically hear him say “screw this”. As for starhorns, i dont really know what them so good luck!

Joking aside boa aint that bad. Sometimes i even wonder if i should just bring entropic dec.

:upside_down_face: I mean so far, Vetruvian only has 2 Ranged removal options, Blood of Air and Wither.

Before Blood of Air, Vetruvians were screaming bloody murder (about Siphon Energy). I understand that in the context of now Vetruvian is pretty  but that’s not reason for them to go back to their binary play platterns of instant-lose (vs a Bloodtide Priestess for example).

take some of that vet removal and give to lyonar, im sure they would appreciate it :+1:

edit: you know, now that i think about it, it’s not ranged removal i want. It’s the fact that transform is so damn strong compared to destroy. They would gladly take BoA.

Speaking of ranged remoal, when is abyss getting something better than Breath of the unborn without having to build a deck around it
